Evil Rising: The Fear Factory
Fear Factory is the 5th incarnation of the Evil Rising brand bought to us by More is More. It started just a year ago and has already terrified thousands of customers, whether it being chased down the back streets of Worcester, or screaming for their lives in the underground Drakelow tunnels in Kidderminster. After using the tunnels for the previous three games, the team have reverted back to their roots as the event takes over the city of Worcester once again. How has the chase game evolved in its first year and what did Fear Factory have in store?
The event started on a quiet industrial estate, similar to the original show. We were given our brief to capture the main character ‘C’ and then were sent on our way. Like before, the game involved lots and lots of running, however our enemies this time were crazed clowns, masked creatures and devilish dolls. The route we took seemed to work perfectly along dark paths, woodlands and fields as although Evil Rising uses public areas, we didn't see anyone else but the characters in the game. This made the whole experience feel more immersive and that we were really alone in our hunt for ‘C’.
Although the game involved a lot of running, we where treated to a number of scenes that serve to move the narrative forward. As always, interaction with the actors makes for a better experience and at times we felt ourselves losing sense of reality and believing ‘C’ was real and that his murders must be stopped! More is More have always used strong actors to bring their games to life and Fear Factory is no different. Despite using almost cliched horror characters in the chase scenes, the show uses brand new stories, and characters to bring the game to life which make the attraction feel fresh, new and exciting.
So how has Evil Rising evolved from a year ago? The scenes between chases seemed more polished with a good mix of audience participation and storytelling. Although nothing to beat the stunning ‘Warehouse scene’ from Evil Rising 1, the panic of being chased into the back of a van with masked ‘thugs’ questioning us was extremely unnerving. Unlike the original game, Fear Factory used clues to help us capture ‘C’. Although we liked this idea, the clues only really seemed beneficial after the game had finished, when we could take a closer look and understand the twists of the story.
More is More have once again proved that they are extremely innovative when it comes to chase games. Although this event didn’t have the chaos that comes from within the Drakelow tunnels, it built up tension in each and every scene with a well placed and choreographed finale which had all of us running for the exit!
