Evil Rising
Evil Rising is a brand new survival game that is played out across a 2 to 3 mile route around the city of Worcester. Eschewing the usual survival game staple of a zombie apocalypse, the event features a story-line including possession, witchcraft and devil worship and then throws in a few zombies for good measure just to keep us zombie lovers happy!
The game shares a lot of DNA with the seminal 2.8 Hours Later in that participants leave the start point in small groups and then make their way to certain checkpoints where scenes are acted out to propel the narrative forward. Of course, it would be too easy if it was just a walk in the park, so along the way any number of creatures can jump out and take chase.
So what was so different about Evil Rising? Firstly, the story was a bit more interesting than the standard zombie fare. The Evil Rising in the title implied something more sinister and some of the characters were more nefarious than expected. The biggest difference between this and other games is that Evil Rising was played out along dark canals, wooded areas and open fields. It was truly believable that we were the only ones left alive as the feeling of isolation was quite powerful at times. Well, that was until a creature would make a sudden appearance and chase us further into the darkness!.
So what of those creatures? They were everywhere and we never knew where they would spring from next. We were all constantly on our guard as the moment they appeared there was only ever one choice, run for your life. We are not sure what would happen if any of us got caught - but nobody wanted to hang around long enough to find out! Even more tense than the times we were running from creatures was when we were having to shuffle past zombies pretending to be one of them knowing that at any time they could turn and attack. When they did - once again there was only one option of course - RUN!
There was a hell of a lot of running in the game - enough to leave us breathless and panting but not enough that it became too unbearable. We would advise sensible shoes because of this, as even with running shoes on, one of our group took a massive tumble in the wet grass and had to scramble back onto their feet and limp off before something caught them! The creature actors were all very lively but we must also commend the actors at each checkpoint who were completely believable. We were encouraged to play along with them and interact fully with each one to help move the story forward.
At the end of the route was a final scene which had most of the team running for the safety of the pub. We felt it was missing one final little element and having spoken to the creative team the day after, they have confirmed they are going to put something in place to end the experience on a high from now on. As it was, we just walked quietly into the pub and ordered a stiff drink!
For something that is so similar in style to 2.8, the team at More is More should be praised for their different take on the event and their choice of venues and locations. From the terrifying opening scene in a deserted warehouse through to deserted canal paths, the event felt more apocalyptic and real than games played in a city centre. We cant wait to see what the team come up with on their next venture.
