Edinburgh Dungeon 2014: Street of Sorrows
On a cold Wednesday night we found ourselves plunged in the darkness of the Edinburgh Dungeon. After being thrown in to the Toll Booth Jail, being tried for Witch Craft and barely escaping the clutches of Sawney Bean's children we came across a small, tight street known only as the Street of Sorrows.
As we stepped on to the street we could feel the ground soften beneath our feet and were told by one of the street's residents not to pay attention it was only filth and muck! This cheeky chap was the “Foul Clenger” who informed us that the plague was now in Edinburgh and his job was to cleanse the street by setting fire to the buildings that surrounded us in the small close. As we listened to his story and dodged the contents of toilets being thrown out windows by the other residents of the street, the smell of burning building became stronger and the smoke grew thicker and when the building started to tumble we knew it was time to get out before we ended up just one more of the ghosts that haunt the street of Edinburgh!
Street of Sorrows is the first new story added to the Edinburgh Dungeon in 2 years and it's definitely been worth the wait. This time they have completely turned it around, there’s new costumes, new make-up, new special effects and more focus on the historical aspect of Edinburgh and Scotland and the gruesome things that actually happened without adding too many “Boos!” in. The balance of humour and straight story telling is perfect and the introduction of the new story which allows you to hear the story, but also feel and smell the street as it would have been during the plague has made a huge difference. The actors who played our guide for this new scene were also incredibly talented and reacted perfectly to everything going on around him and still kept us all thoroughly entertained!
It's also worth noting that one of our group was my very own grandmother, a 5ft and still shrinking 80 + year old. Despite her being tough as nails and really having no issues apart from reaching some of the seats, each actor made sure that she was safe, waited to make sure she was secure and above all didn't think twice to include her in any nonsense going on and every one of them stayed in character. She felt completely involved and loved every minute of it! -
