Edinburgh Dungeon - Review
We have visited each of the UK Dungeon attractions several times and many of them use the same effects and tricks but with different stories. For example the darkness and surround sound of London's Sweeney Todd works just as well for grave robbers Burke and Hare, and York's Ghosts of York show is transformed into something similar but this time featuring Mary King.
Where the regional attractions stand out is when they do something a little different to the standard fare and Edinburgh's scariest attraction is still the Sawney Bean boat ride. Taking place in pitch darkness, the small ride delivers a while knuckle experience with a massive build up of tension released by a couple of very effective shock scares. Even the scene that follows the boat ride - as we were led deeper into Sawney's cave was scarier than it had been in the past due to there being two actors springing out all over the place.
Unfortunately on the day we visited Drop Dead (the re branded Extremis) had broken down so our visit ended with the disappointing (as a finale) Mirror maze. The drop rides in all the attractions are a great powerful ending and the shows seem almost naked without them!
We must mention that we entered with a group of 13 year old school children and their terrified teachers and we had as much fun in the show just watching their reactions throughout. Every scene elicited equal screams and laughter and goes to prove the new marketing line of "fear is a funny thing" to be strangely accurate.
Like all the other UK Dungeons, Edinburgh has recently re branded but unlike our recent trip to Blackpool, the new theming seemed to be applied throughout. The marketing claim of "Better, Bolder and Funnier for 2013 is probably misleading for this year as we found it harder to distinguish much difference since the last William Wallace upgrade Saying that though - the whole show entertained us for a good hour or so and certainly left some lasting impressions on some of those poor children in our party!
