Phobophobia at London Bridge Experience - 2014
During our annual visit to the Phobophobia Halloween event at The London Bridge Experience and London Tombs, something very strange happened. We certainly were expecting it, and none of the team were dressed appropriately, but hey, when the time’s right – you just have to go with the flow. So, about 10 minutes into our tour, we blindly stumbled into a church scene and what happened next has to be the weirdest, scariest and most surreal experience of our Halloween season. We won’t go into all the detail but Michael, site owner and key reviewer for ScareTOUR somehow ended up marrying (at gunpoint) – a 6 foot man in a wedding dress! The ceremony was attended by a horde of baying hillbillies and at some point Michael ended up on all fours between his bride’s legs as she/he egged him to squeal like a pig. What other things really happened in that room are just between the review team, our shocked guests we had from New Zealand’s Generation of Z, and the actors involved. We shall never speak of that moment again!
But jumping back to the beginning, Phobophobia has been running at London Bridge for several years and always offers a different and unique take on the attraction. The educational element used in the day is effectively ignored, and with lights turned down on the sets, a whole menagerie of different monsters is unleashed.
Making our way through the upstairs sets we were assaulted by a number of loud and terrifying effects, and what appeared to be a large number of scare actors around every corner. Over the years, this section has included live animals, zombies and in one year just pitch black walkways, but for 2014, the main creatures in this area where the aforementioned hillbillies. They appeared within several scenes and added a genuine freshness to the whole experience mixing humour, bad taste and horror all in one. And then of course there was that wedding…
Ceremony over and it was time to head downstairs into the true London Tombs. As usual for Halloween, the scare factor has been ramped up with extra actors thrown in throughout. The Tombs experience is a vibrant mix of different scenes and playfully bounces from zombies to clowns to crazy butchers and by the time we were chased out by the multiple chainsaw finale we had experienced a great number of scares.
Having visited the Phobophobia event for most years since it started, we definitely found this one to be the scariest yet. The mix of scary humour upstairs with the ramped up scares of downstairs, all combined to create one enjoyably scary event. Just let’s not ever talk about that wedding again!
