Phobophobia
The London Bridge Experience have been hosting the Phobophobia event for a number of years now, and unlike the regular show that combines history with scares, the Halloween show is all about scaring the punters in as many ways as possible!
The main difference is that the event uses both floors of the building with the gentler history element replaced with even more scares and, this year, a few creepy critters. So lets start with those critters. The first two rooms on the tour included some animal handlers with snakes, lizards and other creatures that a lot of people would be scared of . For us though this was just a chance to get up close to some beautiful animals (especially the reticulated python). The inclusion of the animals, sort of fits in with the "fear of all fears" theme but for an adult only production it felt like the animal meet and greets should have been left in the family shows. In between animal encounters we encountered a number of scarier human characters, who in the darkness of the attraction managed to have many of us screaming in fright. Its been a while since we have done the educational version of the tour but the detailed sets and low ceilings of this area make a perfect backdrop for scaring and we all jumped a number of times.
Before long, we were led downstairs into the normal Tombs experience and this is where the scares came thick and fact. Starting with an extreme close up "cell" with three very disgusting inmates we were soon dispatched into an enhanced version of the regular show. There seemed to be a much higher of number of actors throughout the maze (especially when the creatures in the cell also got out to attack us as well!). All the actors were extremely lively in their roles and utilised hiding spots and cut through to really interact with us leaving us to push deeper and deeper into the maze to get away.
In a normal show, the London Tombs is an impressive attraction due to the set design and sheer length of the experience. But with the additional creatures around every corner we were mercilessly stalked and hunted throughout the whole show and room after room kept coming with no apparent end in sight. We also noticed a number of new sets and scenic elements that have been added since our last visit. It's great to see that the attraction is still being updated on a regular basis.
By the time we came to the final scene of this years event we were ready to get out. We cant remember quite how long the show lasted but it seemed to be never ending with not a quiet spot anywhere along the route. So when the chainsaw roared we had no real choice but t run for the exit!
On the night we visited there was a very healthy crowd waiting to get it and its great to see the attraction so popular. There clearly isn't anything else like it for Halloween in London and its great to see so many people lining up to get scared. We look forward to gong back next Halloween for more scares!
