Edinburgh Dungeon 2015: Deadly Diseases
As well as the big scene changes and upgrades that are usually performed every other year or so, Edinburgh Dungeon, regularly holds small seasonal makeovers such as Summer of Stink and Home of Halloween. Deadly Diseases follows this pattern and utilises the Street of Sorrows scene (previously Mary Kings Close) for a quick gruesome history in diseases such as cholera and its victims. As part of the show we met a new Dungeon character - one of the blood stained barbers who used to asst in times of disease when people couldn't afford a doctor.
The new section bears a great resemblance to the “Street of Sorrows” with somewhat of an upgrade. While much of the story and special effects are the same, the frights provided by the actor herself where pretty unexpected and the balance of comedy was just right.
Through no fault of the actor, the show was quite slight in comparison to the shocks and effects of Street of Sorrows and we certainly would have liked a bit more content. All too soon, the scene was over and we were moved on to the next story. Looking back in hindsight it wasn't bad as such, it just failed to spark our imagination as much as some of the other shows.
At the end of the experience, the large gift shop has been refurbished to become Market Street Shop, a nicely themed immersive shop with rat-strewn cobbles, hanging awnings and swinging rows of tankards, bottles and cages. Goods are displayed on mobile stalls as if the are being sold in a local market. Its a nice new shopping experience and is different to Blackpool and London who have both converted their gift shops into a bar.
The seasonal makeovers can always be a bit hit and miss and unfortunately Deadly Diseases didn't stand out in an attraction filled with other memorable experiences. Despite that - we had an really enjoyable visit.
