Bunker 13 review
The hard working guys at GNG entertainment are back at Magna for their 2nd annual Halloween event. With all new sets and a completely fresh new story, what would we discover lurking within Bunker 13?
Bunker 13 is a bespoke stand alone attraction based in a large open part of the Magna science exhibition in Sheffield. Located right at the entrance to the museum, the attraction utilises an imposing concrete bunker style wall to set the atmosphere from the start. An armed soldier stands guard at the main door and when our group is ready, he barks orders for us to proceed.
An introductory video explains the history of the bunker, but we found the dialogue unintelligible and so missed a lot of the back story before entering the show. With the video images and a few odd words we could make out that strange experimentation on human subjects had been carried out in Bunker 13 during the Cold War in a bid to create a new super breed of human. If you like to know the full back story for an attraction before entering, then we suggest you read the website first.
Once inside we were treated to a non-stop assault from active and very vocal residents who clearly weren't happy with our presence. Threats were made, pathways were blocked and things were thrown around as the actors got extremely up close and personal.
When we could actually stop and look at the scenery, we could notice detailed elements throughout that would have been good to stand and read (if it wasn't for the blood thirsty mutants chasing after us!)
With a technical/science theme it would have been very easy for the maze to include a techno strobe maze for one of the rooms but the team decided to do something a little different. On entering the maze section our group was split in two and we were sent in different competing directions. Instead of a strobe, the room was filled with fog and industrial nightclub style lasers which bounced effortless off the shiny metal fencing. The whole scene looked beautiful bathed in blue laser light, and between flashes we could see our panicked friends being terrified by something unexplainable, which in the next breath would turn round and start stalking us! The design of this maze meant that both parties took different routes, meeting monsters on all sides yet still joining up for the show's finale.
With one final corridor and a quick push through the doors, we were back out in the safety of the science centre, all out of breath from what we had just experienced.
It is worth noting that despite being only a temporary build attraction, Bunker 13 has the feel of something more permanent - due to the solid walls and the professional lighting and sound effects throughout. In fact, the whole soundscape was composed specifically for the show by sound engineer Paul Davies and it's nice to hear something original instead of some of the stock material many attractions use these days.
All in, the GNG team have once again come up with an attraction that is both fun and scary. It doesn't break any boundaries in terms of scare attractions but does have an interesting story with some excellent theming and acting talent. Over the next two nights, the attraction will be open for adults only nights, where they have promised to shake things up a bit and really take guests out of their comfort zone! Seeing how scared we were during the normal show, it will be interesting to see just how much more extreme they can get!
