Zombie Uprising Swynnerton
Deep in the Staffordshire moorlands, hidden in acres upon acres of army training grounds, we were to find one of the Midlands biggest zombie run event to date.
Equipped with only a pair of goggles, a single shot BB pistol and earplugs we were left to discover what the latest Zombie Uprising had to offer. Boasting tanks, C4, grenades, and real vehicles to shuttle to various locations, this event certainly had us excited.
We turned up, signed our disclaimer and were issued with our goggles and earplugs and before we knew it we were packed into the back of a van and were on our way to the first location. Prior to this we were given a number of safety points due to where the event was situated. Packed in the back of a Mercedes van guarded by a single soldier wielding an automatic BB rifle for our protection we headed off deep into the heart of the base. The drive took short of 5 minutes and we were brought into the main woodlands of the site. The groups were divided up into two teams and we were introduced to our team leader who delivered us a little element of the story. We were informed that a rogue team of operatives had gone missing since the virus outbreak and it was our job to discover what happened.
As soon as we left our initial briefing bunker we were soon on our toes running from the first two zombies which were rather slow walking zombies therefore it didn’t take much for the group to avoid them. As the event progressed they became a bit more aggressive in their attack styles, and we made our way to our first checkpoint where we were met by some of the rogue soldiers. Through some well played out drama with these soldiers, we were finally handed our guns and then split off into two individual taskforces:
Our group had the task of finding the key card from a missing soldier marked on our map. One of the members from our group had the map and after around 10 minute walking we found the camp where the solider was located slumped up a tree accompanied by two zombies. A couple of shots and they were done for so we headed back to the base and refilled our ammo whilst waiting for the other group to arrive with the professor.
Once gathered we headed to another base which we had to infiltrate and await for the chopper to extract us and end the mission. However, this was never going to happen as we were spotted and the soldiers opened fire onto the two groups throwing explosive grenades and smoke to make the mission a little trickier. Further down the line a bomb was thrown into the mix which needed detonating but nothing really happened with this apart from an ambush of zombies. One of the members of our group got squirted across his face with fake blood which added numerous laughs within the group to one persons expense!
Before we knew it we were walking once more to another extraction point where the professor was taken from the group by a group of soldiers on a quad bike where we were held hostage once again. More of the same followed in terms of shooting some zombies and finding some C4 from a bunker and a quick ammo refill.
Before long we were heading to the final compound armed with C4 to blow the gates off and deliver the professor to find a cure for the infection. Another same scenario of shooting zombies while defending from soldiers unfolded and abruptly the game was over.
Confused by how the game had ended we were walking back towards where we originally parked and told we could fire off remaining bullets from the guns but not towards the cars. While walking back a few members were chatting about how short the event was. Advertised as roughly three to four hours our group managed to finish the whole thing in just over two hours. With only one shuttle transfer along the way, the event seemed smaller than first imagined, however the space they had was utilised really well.
Overall Zombie Uprising was a fun an enjoyable event which aimed more towards an orienteering kind of zombie game with airsoft thrown in for good measure. Some of the zombies proved slight challenges to the group but didn’t add as much fear or fun as the soldiers wielding the automatic BB guns. During the drive home the aches on our feet, mud splashed over our clothing and blood over our faces reminded us of how much fun we had during the event. We look forward to seeing what the creative team learn from this event and create for their next big game.
