Review - Zombie Shoot Out
Fearmasters have been holding the impressive Yorkshire Scare Grounds event on their private land off of Hell Lane for several years, and recently have expanded their offering to include Airsoft style skirmish games. Taking the military/Airsoft theme one further, this year they have introduced Zombie Shoot Out...
In the main reception area we were met by a massive array of impressive AirSoft equipment and soon the team were helping us get kitted out with combat wear, safety gear and a hefty looking, realistic weapon. We got talking to the other players and a team had actually travelled all the way from Gibraltar to take part in the Zombie Shoot Out! They seemed a really great bunch of guys, but were professional Airsoft players that were looking for something new and different and couldn't wait to get stuck in. We felt slightly unprepared next to them!
Sergeant Major Longcock (don't laugh because he doesn't like it) then took over and briefed us as to why we were there. The story follows on directly from the Halloween 2012 event and we have been enlisted as civilians to help wipe out the last of the undead who are still roaming the land. After a few warnings our attention is distracted by a zombie that was being dragged out from the "hot zone" by two soldiers. Snarling and writhing the zombie was led towards us but soon broke free creating havoc throughout all the players!
Finally, after brief training in close quarters combat followed by a spell on the shooting range it was time to take on the zombies for real. We were lead into the Wastelands, a mock village, and briefed on our mission. From here, even the experienced Air Soft players were surprised. As we entered small out houses in the Wastelands we were literally being mauled by hidden zombies. One poor man entered a building and was pounced on by two zombies, dragged to the floor and "eaten alive." We stood no chance of finding the scientist as the undead were relentless and just kept coming back for more! It was exhilerating and scary in equal measures. It didn't help that the zombies were former soldiers defending the area and had retained some memory of what they should do with their weapons!
After a break for lunch, gameplay moved to the vast woodland area where we spent the rest of the afternoon being attacked at different locations, including the very dark Bunker. Again. the zombies seemed to pounce from nowhere pulling us to the floor or shooting back at us from a distance. A lot of work has gone into some of these sets and the Scare Grounds already looks different from last Halloween. In fact. we passed a few areas that were sealed off with Halloween 2013 construction works evident.
By the end of the day some of us were soaked in blood and mud but everyone had enjoyed themselves with even the experienced players surprised at how intense and physical it had been!. Us? we were exhausted as we had been on the go continuously. It had been tense, tiring and terrifying at times but we had a great time!
Talking to the Fear Masters team afterwards they said that even they had to take their hats off to the actors who played zombies. They were dressed in various costumes with just eye protection or masks and took a LOT of shots from all of us. They played their parts well and although they died, they soon got back up again and the attacks were continuous without the slightest "ouch that hurt." They remained in character all day.
Air Soft is clearly a popular sport and we had a great time. There will always be some experienced players who take it very seriously but whatever your level you will definitely have a "bloody" good time!

Due to the physical nature of this event we were advised to leave all phones and cameras at base camp.
