Zombie Earth Apocalypse
Earlier this year we really enjoyed the brand new city wide zombie chase game, Zombie Earth and so when they announced a new version for Halloween, we packed our trainers and loaded up on energy drinks!
Once general check in was completed, we were given the back story of the event. It seems that a large pharmaceutical company had been conducting experiments on a new flu vaccine but on importing the vaccine back to the UK it somehow became tainted. This virus could be transmitted by contact with the infected, but doesn't always mean the virus has been transmitted.. So equipped with our maps and split into groups of approx 10. We headed off to our first location
What then followed was a mix of zombie attacks, periods of running, hunting for clues to the next location and a LOT of zombie dodging. Scenes along the way included a pub, an industrial estate, a car park and some other very dark and creepy locations. We don't want to give too much away but the next two paragraphs describe two different scenes and hopefully they give some idea of the nature of the event and how the scenes play out differently:
Turning the corner we were faced with a few slow type zombies in quite a wide area so they were pretty easy to avoid for most of the group. We then proceeded around the corner into a semi-populated area with zombies mixing in with the members of the public. It was quite hard to determine who was a member of the public and who was trying to eat us but when they attacked they were fairly fast, and would come out of no-where, splitting our group up as we ran to get away.
Later on we experienced "The Car Park" which was one of the most intense parts of the whole event and our favourite scene of the night. We were instructed to use the lift and go to the fifth floor and then complete a small mission within the parking structure. We managed our mission without too much of a fuss but little did we know that all hell was about to break loose. We progressed down the ramp a little way and then the zombies attacked from both sides and we started to run. Dodging left and right we made it past the first batch of zombies who seemed to carry on chasing us as more and more zombies appeared behind concrete posts and the like. We lost count on the amount of zombies that were chasing us at any time but this went on for 3 floors and it was by pure luck that we did not all get tagged as infected!
In each scene and location we changed our tactics depending on what the zombies seemed to be doing - sometimes running hell for leather and sometimes being more tactical. We generally found that the stealth strategy was working for the group. Well, that was until until someone decided to take a picture of the zombies, who turned on him in an instant, leaving him "dead" as we continued our escape!
By the time we hit the final checkpoint we were very tired and wet and and military officers scanned us for any signs of infection. Those infected were taken away for processing and compared to similar shows we liked the fact that our now made up friends were able to join in the chase for the final scene. Then it was time for a well earned drink!
In summary the event was great fun and being split into groups of about 10 people made it just the right size. The actors were amazing and managed to set the scene, whilst being completely convincing (although perhaps more intelligent than we recall from any zombie films!). The missions varied in intensity from a single zombie attack to an all-out frenzy and definitely got all our hearts pounding. We did think that some of the long walks between the locations could have been broken up by one or two zombies or characters and with the hard to read maps we were left wondering a few times if we were going the right way as nothing had happened for a stretch.
There is a lot of walking (and running for that matter), and we could certainly feel it the next day. But the aches just served to remind us about how much fun and scares we had the night before. Who ever thought that the zombie apocalypse would be this entertaining?

We did Zombie Earth on a Saturday night in Leicester city center, and it was Amazing, probably one of the best things I have ever done, I could not recommend it enough, and will definitely do it again!!
The organizers should be so proud of themselves because they did such a good job, and so much time and effort must have gone into it, it was all so well though out and well executed. The actors were brilliant, managing to stay in character while I had a laughing fit, I think I was so scared I just did not know what to do. The actors really were brilliant!
The settings were fantastic, really creepy, and not too far apart, but enough to give you time to build up some anticipation.
The zombies were really good too, some were genuinely really scary, I would love to have a go at that next time!
Absolutely fantastic night out, very well done to the organizers and a massive thank you for such a good night. I will be coming back for more and recommending to everyone I know, and bringing some with me next time.
