Zombie Earth, Leicester
Zombie Earth is a brand new city wide zombie chase game that has just opened in Leicester. Having experienced 2.8 Hours later and Evil Rising, we were looking forward to seeing how this would compare.
We arrived at our designated start point half an hour before our time slot to get signed in and upon our arrival, the zombies were already waiting for us, lurking around the car park. It seemed that so long as we didn't get too close or panic we would be safe.... for now.
Once we signed our consent and health and safety forms we had our arms wrapped up in bright yellow banners so that whilst in the game the zombies knew who they were chasing and not to attack any other members of the public. We were then put into groups and had our briefing. The games rules were as follows.
Zombies are all over the city in various checkpoints. To reach these checkpoints we were given a map. At each checkpoint we would find the coordinates to our next location all the while trying not to get caught and be infected.... However If you were caught you could still carry on with the game but at the end there would be a 'surprise' awaiting for you. We were also informed that there was two types of zombies. Type one was the old fashioned zombie that moved slowly and type two were the modern day fast runners!
So equipped with our maps, knowledge and adrenaline, we headed off with trepidation especially when we discovered our first location was a multi story car park - and the zombies were everywhere! In fact so much so that it seemed rather unfair against our small groups of six, especially as we discovered that there didn't seem to be any slow type one zombies at all. We do wonder if there may have been some cheating going on as all but two of our team were caught and infected in just the first zone!
This idea that maybe the zombie actors weren't giving us a chance, became more prominent at our next location which was a small warehouse. Pitch black inside we were told by a host to 'strictly not run' therefore the zombies surely also must be slow movers? But alas our team were chased at full speed and caught all over again. However since we had been advised to work as a team we decided to leave our two survivors from zone one outside and find the next coordinates to our next destination knowing they would be safe.
We decided that this would then be our game strategy as we feared there would be NO survivors at the end so unless they truly wanted to enter the next location and risk their lives they instead could watch and laugh at the others being attacked. However on the last three locations it was impossible for our two survivors to stay alive and walk around the 'play area' and had to go through. Again, with too many zombies we lost one more survivor leaving just one left. Which is handy, as along the way some of the actors in various locations would refuse to talk to anyone infected in our team. We do wonder what would have happened if we had all been caught - would the actors have refused to talk to any of us and tell us where to go? A potential flaw in the game perhaps?
At the end of the game to our amazement, despite the game being seemingly impossible, we still had one survivor left. We were met by an army officer who informed us to go to a location up the road to receive our surprise. Once there we were all checked to see if we had been infected and all but one of us were taken into a tent to receive 'treatment' while the survivor went on to the aftershow party a few hundred yards away. Like other zombie chase games - we all met up again - some looking a lot worse for wear than when they started.
Looking back at the event in whole, we really enjoyed it but found it very difficult to stay alive (although that's probably what a real zombie apocalypse might be like!) and felt that some of the intense crowds of zombies in the main locations could have been spread out around the course more. At times we would walk about 15/20 minutes between locations with nothing happening and we might have stayed more involved (and not convinced that we were lost) if one or two zombies or characters had broken up these long pauses. It didn't help that our map was really hard to read and even locals we met from Leicester had trouble deciphering where to go. These little niggles aside we actually found the game to be extremely intense in places.
We think that a few of the issues we encountered may just have been teething issues seeing as this was the first public run through. We know that there are already a few changes planned. So if you want to play a really hard zombie chase game that offers something a bit different to otherss why not check out one of Zombie Earth's upcoming events?.

We loved Zombie Earth but think more could have been done at the start point. Turning up to a car park that had a banner pinned up made us wonder what we were turning up to, Then when you left the start point on this narrow street you were chased straight away with not much room to get away so we lost a teammate right from the off. There were too many zombies in areas, in the multi storey car park we knew as soon as we got to floor 4 and saw how many there were it was game over, which was a shame, the maps were a nightmare, we had 2 lads from Leicester and they were struggling. All in all we really enjoyed ourselves and the zombies costumes and makeup we thought were better than 2.8 hours
