The Real Mary King's Close- Review
When we last visited The Real Mary Kings Close underneath Edinburgh's Royal mile we were taken aback by how spooky and unnatural everything felt down there. Although not a scare attraction in its own right, this popular tourist experience certainly has a very spooky atmosphere and it's hard not to imagine that the place is genuinely haunted.
What didn't help our group is that two people actually fainted while we were taking the tour. Had they seen something? Was there something malevolent at foot? Or was it just a bit stuffy down there due to the unseasonably warm weather we had left behind when we went underground? Whatever it was - it added a frisson of tension to the rest of the tour - especially during the ghost story segment and our time in little Annie's room.
New for 2013 is an interactive gallery feature, where guests learn more about Mary King herself when her portrait comes to life and starts talking. This new feature adds more depth and history to the whole experience and was compiled following some very extensive research.
The rest of the tour remained pretty much as it was before but with our lively costumed guide and the strange and gory tales she had to tell, made a very entertaining and educational experience in a time long past. The tour is a fascinating historical account of life in old Edinburgh and actually quite sensibly plays down the paranormal element to focus on educating rather than scaring. As we said before: "If you are looking to be scared witless then the tour isn’t for you; if you want a fun and informative experience with a couple of chills along the way, then we would highly recommend you visit"
