The Rat Walk at London Dungeon
Earlier this year it was revealed that Merlin Entertainments were looking for a new location for the London Dungeon which immediately put into doubt any new attraction for their site in Tooley Street. Having invested heavily in Vengeance in 2011, it was obvious that they wouldn’t want to spend too much more on infrastructure on a building that they possibly wouldn’t be staying in.
But is has become tradition for the Dungeon to launch new features each year and with a simple bit of path redirection a new route right past the live rats has created a new start to the show – The Rat Walk.
Over recent years, the Dungeon’s large population of (pet) rats have lived in a large cage off to the side of the main waiting area. As they were out of the way, guests would have to actively seek them out and many people probably missed them. Not any more!
As guests walk down the ramp into the waiting area, they are now directed right past the original main tank which is joined by other rat enclosures all around and for a short while, guests are literally surrounded by rats.
Of course – that’s the idea – but rats being quite shy (and often nocturnal) creatures, most of the little blighters were either curled up asleep or moving around at the back of the cages keeping away from the “noisy humans”
Although rats are actually very good house pets and are generally very well behaved, these poor little creatures were getting a lot of attention from guests walking through who were calling them “disgusting” and smelly yet all the while being unable to take their eyes off them!
Although only a small addition to the whole Dungeon experience the new Rat Walk does make a better job of presenting the dungeon’s rats to the guests and helps explain their pivotal role in history (for example as carriers of the plague). So unless you suffer from severe Musophobia (fear of rats and mice) then you’ll enjoy this small new addition to the line up.

Following the Rat Walk, the Dungeon plays out all its usual scenes with the mix of gore and horror that we have come to expect and of course finishes with the amazing Extremis drop ride to doom. We have covered the main show many times on this site so check out one of our review links below
