The Clinic: Neurogen at Walibi Holland
Last year Walibi Holland introduced the world to a unique horror experience called The Clinic. You can read a complete spoiler full synopsis of the attraction here, but in essence the attraction made you encounter what happens after you die in a terrifying "alone" experience strapped on to a hospital gurney. The Clinic looks set to return as part of Halloween Fright Nights, but in the mean time, the park have just launched Neurogen - a new experience linked to The Clinic, but this time utilising new virtual reality technology.
Advertised as a brain enhancement technique, the external marketing for Neurogen is insidiously bright and cheerful. You can tell that something sinister is afoot but it is hard to put your finger on it. Surely the age restrictions and warning signs are an indicator, but soon we are taken in for our treatment and led to our treatment chair. Apart from the medical staff around us - we are completely alone, and once we are settled in and the VR strapped on, we are launched into a photo realistic world.
What follows is a VR movie experience showing a human being from birth to a fatal accident. As well as the immersive video, the seat itself moves in time with events in the movie, and with the addition of other tactile effects (including some particularly potent smells, it becomes a real psychological trip. Although it is associated with the Clinic - it is less horror and more of a clever mind trick.
Mascha Till, director of Walibi Holland said "Neurogen is an attraction that goes beyond 3D movies and VR applications as they are known in the industry. It is a combination of real life filmed 3D content, VR, binaural headphones and a special chair for the 'patients' with various effects. And like a doctor, we visit Neurogen all alone. This fits perfectly with our new catchphrase at the park - 'Dare to get Real"
One final note - we were surprised that all the video is played in English! So anyone from the UK will easily be able to understand the whole experience!
