Review - Horror Nights NL 2016
As it has been in the past, Horror Nights in Hilversum (NL) is the horror event to start the Halloween season in the Netherlands. Concentrating again on story telling and authentic horror, this year’s motto is “the Gypsies are in Town”. Like last year, Horror Nights offers four different horror attractions, three of them are actual mazes and the last being a horror show called “Séance”. So, we have four completely new attractions to discover and upon arrival we can already tell that Horror Nights has once again created a wonderfully terrifying world with many scares and things to do, see and scream about!
The name of the park's main scare zone is “The Gypsies are in Town”, a camp with many scare actors walking around and entertaining visitors. If you’re hungry and want some noodles, a kind woman may help you out - if not - from the camp, you have access to the different horror attractions.
Borka Groaznic’s House of Magic
Borka Groaznic is the protagonist of this beautiful-themed and very creatively implemented horror maze. Before entering the first room, Borka himself gives you an atmospheric pre-show to his house of magic. The maze itself is a good mix of very creative theming (mirror effects, room of cards) and smart hiding places for the scare actors, who all performed very actively and entertaining. We also really liked the makeup of all the actors inside the maze. Additionally, we really have to underline the acting quality of Mr. Groaznic, who thoroughly entertained us with his humorous and scary pre-show, while waiting in the queue.
The Rite
This maze is described as an “initiation ritual” and this is perhaps the best description for this insanely stressful maze!. Once you entered, there was no defined route to get out. You’re completely on your own and the continuous strobing effects, it was really easy to get lost and disorientated. The intensity of this maze is definitely not to be underestimated with scares guaranteed throughout. For all of us, this maze was the absolute highlight of this event.
Mist
Mist was the only maze, which returned from last year, but has also seen some changes. During the pre-show, you get a lamb to lead you through the Dark in this this outdoor-attraction. The winding path made it very hard to foresee what was coming next, but be certain about it - “de witte wieven” (Dutch for “White Weird Sisters”) are looking forward to meeting you!
Séance
Last but not least, there’s a new exciting show inside the old building of “Werf 35”. This show has only limited places per session and and as such is a pay extra attraction - but it’s definitely worth it. We don’t want to tell too much about it, otherwise we would spoil too much, but you should definitely be part of this necromancy, when you plan to visit Horror Nights.
All in all, Horror Nights managed to improve on the exciting experience we had last year. This year’s Horror Nights were definitely more intense than last year, with less focus on gory splatter horror. There is still a strong focus on detailed and elaborate story telling, alongside some really strong scares and jumps (especially within The Rite)
Another great touch is that even as a foreign language speaker you can fully enjoy this event as thhe pre-shows are possible in English as well, if the team realise you are not Dutch!
So if you’re around, don’t hesitate to visit. The event is now open each weekend until the 2nd of October. Get your Halloween started with a bang! Just look out for those gypsies!
