Horror Nights NL
Horror Nights has been running in Holland since 2013 and was created by former staff members from Walibi's Fright Nights. For 2015 the event has a new venue in the industrial area of Hilversum, a city close to Amsterdam which is often referred to as Media City due to the location of the broadcasting channel NPO. The slogan of this years event is "Which story do you want to tell" and for that reason each maze has its own detailed background. The layouts of the whole event is quite impressive, in that it features three individual scare mazes all connected by a scare zone full of wandering creatures. Wee visited on opening night to see it for ourselves
The Nautilus was by far our favourite maze of the night. The maze was full of jumps and scares and the cast were extremely lively and active throughout. Themed to the 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea story, we were forced to wear "diving googles", which actually blurred our vision quite a bit. It was almost like we had been drinking too much! and as such it was hard to see exactly what was waiting for us in the dark. This made the attraction ever scarier - especially when when at one point we realised we had wandered off from our group and were walking through on our own!. Not that we could ever feel alone in this maze with the number of actors surrounding us. The pathways and walkways were really narrow and tightly angled which really helped with the feeling of being trapped in the maze. From beginning to end this maze had us screaming ana laughing and was definitely the highlight maze of the night and worth visiting the event just to experience.
See no Evil is a clever play on words as this attraction effectively removes your sense of sight as guests are hooded upon entry. Once inside we had to rely on our other senses to survive, and we could sense and hear multiple creatures around us. Although less intense than Nautilus the maze had some interesting scares in the darkness
The third maze in the line up is actually an outdoor attraction called "Mist". Here we were tasked with helping Johanna find her true love Anton who was lost somewhere in the Mist. Of course, we weren't the only ones in the mist and all manner of creatures were waiting to pounce out on us . Despite the rather simple theming, this attraction had an immersive story line and some very special sound effects gave us some great scares throughout.
The three mazes are all connected by a scarezone area which was populated with many different and lively characters, who prowled up and down looking for their next victim. It was great entertainment between the mazes and better then just waiting around in an empty car park.
All in - we really enjoyed our visit to Horror Nights NL. The three mazes were all very different in style and execution but all included detailed background and storytelling and were populated with some really lively actors. Clearly a lot of thought had gone into the design of these attractions and it was great to see the whole crew working together to create so many frights!
We look forward to seeing how the event develops in the future!
