Europa Park Horror Nights - 2014
After winning the prestigious SCAR Award for best international scare event at the recent ScareCON, Horror Nights at Europa Park set the bar pretty high for this years event. After finding its feet last year without the collaboration with American Rock Artist Marc Terenzi, this year promised great scares, atmosphere and entertainment.
Dead Inside 2.0
Dead Inside returns to Horror Nights for its second season. Last years incarnation proved to be the most intense maze of the event. With a slightly different layout, and rather impressive new ‘hostage’ scene, the maze again proved to be a favourite. The use of pitch black darkness contrasted with the brightest strobe rooms the attraction kept us on our toes throughout. Although the maze has a great new beginning, it was missing ‘The Button’ room ending which we all loved so much last year. Overall Dead Inside is a solid maze, just lacking an ending.
The Crypt – Reborn
.
The Crypt is another returning maze for this year's event. Although the attraction used the same scenes and theming from previously, the maze had a slightly different feel to it. The Crypt – Reborn used less ‘larger than life’ characters by only using the 10 foot Egyptian guard as opposed to the previous year of using many elaborate costumed characters. Although we missed these characters, the new ending more than made up for it. Without giving away any spoilers, the use of multiple actors along with dummies and smart lighting techniques, we genuinely felt under attack from the un-dead within the Crypt. By far the best maze ending we have seen in a long time.
Labor
Labor is the brand new laboratory that houses working zombies! Of course not all goes to plan and multiple zombies go on the rampage. Labor is a huge contrast compared to the other attractions at Horror Nights. The maze uses bright lit areas for you to get up close and personal with the zombies as apposed to the traditional darker attraction. The maze also housed some great scenes with trip switches that would give you a triple whammy of scare! When a switch is pushed it changes the light and sound to give the actor that little extra help to give us a great scare. Great fun!
Der Fluch des Werewolfs
The Curse of the Werewolves was our most anticipated maze. The run up to October came with multiple teaser trailers on the Horror Night Facebook page and website which advertised this maze as its signature attraction. We were expecting great things and were unfortunately let down greatly. The attraction uses much of last years ‘Villa’ scenes. The only obvious differences were the difference in characters. Gone were the Villa residents and in their place came Werewolves. Unfortunately the maze often seemed under occupied and the scares just didn’t come. It seems unusual that this attraction was chosen to be their signature maze during advertising when it appears to be a simple re-theme of last years Villa. That being said, the team must be commended for an ingenious first scene when a perfectly healthy girl becomes a Werewolf before our very eyes
Nightmare
Nightmare is the third new maze at Horror nights this year and wow did we save the best to last. This attraction had it all, out of this world characters, beautiful theming and a great story. The maze follows the story of the Nightgrabber, an evil mythological creature that lives in the Nightgrabber forest. After a little girl goes missing, it is up to us to visit our nightmares to find her. This maze delivered from beginning to end. The theming was out of this world and the characters were so unique. We re-lived all our nightmares from the dentist, to clowns and even ventured into the Nightgrabbers forest itself! Nightmare was definitely the most impressive attraction at Horror Nights.
Scare-Zones
End of Days and Zombie Arrival return for another year and both Scare Zones are inhabited with flesh eating zombies that do a fantastic job at scaring passers by. Horror Nights Scare zones really add to the overall atmosphere of the park and we were pleased to see the introduction of a brand new scare zone for 2014. The Nightgrabber Forest Scare zone is located at the very beginning of the Horror Nights Park, meaning you must succumb to the Nightgrabbers before you even think about your first maze. The zone inhabits the evil Nightgrabber friends that can be found lurking around every corner.
Horror Nights creates an atmosphere of pure fear. The park is full of Scare Mazes, Scare Zones and numerous roaming characters to ensure the night is jam packed full of entertainment. All this along with the Horror on Ice show, its an event that always delivers.
