Dr Fright's Halloween Horror Nights 2013
We've been visiting Dr Frights in Northampton since it first opened in 2010 and the event never fails to scare and entertain us. This year sees two new mazes, The Exorcism and Bad Trip which replace the 13th Floor and Alone.
Hidden behind an impressive facade of crucifixes, The Exorcism throws visitors right into the heart of a mass exorcism in an orphanage. Possessed children were scattered around the attraction and priests were struggling to take control of their souls. Throughout this maze were a number of great jump scares and some disturbing images as we saw the children fighting with the demons within. Due to the set design and room layouts we were forced really close to the actors and the events which made the whole event even scarier.
Grindhouse has taken many of the elements of last years maze and added even more hillbillys and chainsaws. The pathway winds both indoors and out, and the addition of several upturned cars were a great thematic touch. Throughout the show there were scares from all sides and different scenes depicted the visual horror of previous victims. All the actors were very physical throughout and we were hunted down mercilessly by these blood crazed mutants.
The Asylum is a strobe light/chain link fence style attraction which has always been one of the most popular mazes at the event. This year sees an impressive facade that hides the marquee underneath and makes the attraction look more permanent. Once inside there were more inmates and deranged doctors than before and a new route that left us completely disorientated and confused. As you would expect, the Asylum actors were some of the liveliest of the night.
Bad Trip was an exciting new addition that made everyone take a small pill before entering. Once inside, this was just an excuse to assault our senses with some of the most bizarre, freaky experiences we have ever seen in a scare maze. All accompanied by a thumping soundtrack that echoes through the attraction. Despite going through this maze twice it's actually very difficult to recall everything that we saw along the way. A bird face man stalked us, some dummies came to life and a drug enforcement officer shot us several times. We think! It was so confusing (but in a good way) that we still look back on the experience wondering what happened. Maybe there was something in that pill we took before we went? Either way - we know we had fun and there was none of the usual comedown!
This years line up is the strongest yet and even though it's just a temporary event, the organisers have tried hard to make the marquees look more professional with the addition of some well themed facades. Add these to the general atmosphere, rethemed burger van, movie trailers and roaming characters and the whole event is a great night out.
