Arcane
Question - When is a scare attraction not a scare attraction? Answer - when it is a free flowing theatrical experience, where guests are able to walk around the town, interact with everyone, find clues, change outcomes, and run tasks, whilst surrounded by a tale of deceit, murder, corruption, dead children, ghosts and a chainsaw. But that all sounds a bit long winded so perhaps the answer to the question should just be "When it is Arcane"
We visited the latest event by Apocalypse Events with no real knowledge of what we were about to experience - the website just hints of a town with secrets. Our mission was to find out what those secrets were, so after being hooded and led through a portal into the town of Arcane - we were left to explore.
The key thing about an event such as this is the need to get involved, be inquisitive, explore everywhere and really interact with the characters to find out what has happened to the town. The town itself is an extremely impressive set that hides a number of different scenes and clues. What is the identity of the burnt corpse? Is the mayor as benevolent as he first appears?, and more importantly what the hell made those things move in the grieving mother's bedroom? As we continued through the experience we were sent on different quests and clues and each character provided more background to the story and enabled us to understand if the town really was haunted.
As we walked around passing other groups we heard people say they had seen a ghost. We hadn't although we had certainly experienced some strange activity. Our experiences were all different, and in some rooms we worked with strangers to try and dig deeper into the underlying mystery. Throughout, the actors helped us with our quests or sometimes hindered us if we got too close to the truth. There was so much to explore and take in that we may have missed a couple of the scenes. All too soon, circumstances built up to a genuinely scary finale, that had the group racing through tunnels to escape the cursed town, bursting out into the fresh air, pondering the secrets and horrors we had just experienced.
Events such as Arcane, rely on the believability of the actors, and the performances from everyone we met were all excellent. Bearing in mind that these actors have no idea what questions we are going to ask, or our reactions, they all stayed perfectly in character and progressed the story on. We are sure that if we had stayed longer they could have kept up the characterisation for hours!
And there is perhaps our only complaint about Arcane - we needed just a little bit more time to fully unravel and experience everything. We were so involved with the story and the underlying mystery that we wanted to tie up all the loose ends we had been fed. As it is we may never know, but it certainly left us thinking.
We loved Arcane from beginning to end, but must warn that it is not a full scale scare attraction - it really is live interactive promenade theater with a scare/horror element. If you are looking to be chased by blood thirsty zombies - then try Zombie Swat next door. But if you want to experience a truly immersive and thought provoking performance with some scares along the way then book yourself a visit to the town of Arcane. The locals are dying to meet you - just don't expect them to give away too many secrets....
Due to the the secretive nature of this event - there are no photos to accompany this review
