Alien War - 26 Years of Terror
It was the UK's first real scare attraction and terrified visitors on and off since first opening in Scotland in 1992. Join us as we look back at one of the UK's most fondly remembered scare events EVER!
1992 War Begins
Alien War was the brainchild of Gary Gillies and John Gorman – 2 friends with a passion for the Alien movies. For those who don’t know the original films, they both relied on strong visuals and contained many scenes of people running down industrial style corridors pursued by bloodthirsty aliens. Gary and John knew they could turn this into something exciting, something that had never been done in the UK before and hence Alien War was born. So in 1992, just as film fans were getting excited about the release of Alien 3 at the cinema, Alien War opened in Glasgow.
The basic concept of the show has remained the same over the years. Guests are lead into an infected facility with the help of a guide and very quickly things start to do down hill. What then follows is a frantic run through the facility trying to escape from the seemingly multiple aliens attacking from all sides. Unlike most “safe” attractions where you walk slowly in organised groups – Alien War created a sensation of sheer panic that would leave people hanging on to strangers and running for their lives. Nobody had ever experienced any thing like this before!

1993 - The War travels
The intention was always to tour the attraction around the UK and on leaving Glasgow – the show moved to Aberdeen and then Bournemouth for a few months each time. Once a London location was identified it was clear that the touring plans would be put on hold and extra time and money was put into creating an exciting new permanent show with new features. The underground space in the Trocadero was perfect for the show and many of the lower corridors were stylishly decorated to look like dark and ominous spaceship corridors. Every now and then passing visitors would be startled by screams or gunfire from within the attraction and this just created more tension and anticipation for what was inside.
The base itself was a maze of corridors and rooms, and was constructed with metal sheets on the floor to simulate gridded areas, and a metal walkway. The corridors had pre-formed panels which had been made at Pinewood studios, from the original moulds from Alien and Aliens. These were then aged and distressed to give the appearance of a decrepit run down station.
Unique in its time, the attraction used Hollywood style special effects including pulse rifles which triggered special sound effects round the building. Famously for a while, these effects didn't work so the marines would run around the compound firing real blank bullets! The show drew a lot of attention and was opened by Lance Henriksen and Sigourney Weaver. The press coverage from the launch alone was massive and it looked like the aliens had found themselves a permanent home!
Due to the very nature of the attraction, the creative team was able to play around and change things quickly, and quite often two run throughs would never be the same. To mix things up they would sometimes throw a Predator or some other type of alien into the show. Famously while in London, Michael Jackson visited the attraction and sent one of his bodyguards through to test it out. Half way through, the bodyguard ran out screaming and Michael decided that he didn’t want to participate any more. To this day, the Aliens team still wonder how he may have reacted if he had actually gone through!

1994 - War gets technical
The London show used an innovative electronic system called Soundfire which was developed to allow the weapons to sound like those used in the actual films. This complex system used pulse rifles with infrared transmitters and small strobe lights (to simulate muzzle flash). On pulling the trigger a signal was transmitted to hidden receivers, which would then trigger special gunfire central computer then plays gunfire location specific sound effects. Technologically the effect was ahead of its time and had many operational issues during its run but was generally fully operational in 1994.

1996 - War is Over
The attraction ran successfully for several years until the venue suffered a massive flood in 1996. The original creative team had long since moved on after selling the concept to a third party, After the set damage from the flood, the new owners decided it would not be cost effective to reopen the show. Although closed – the exterior corridors and signage remained up at the Trocadero for several years afterwards.

1999 - War returns
Sensing there was still a demand for Xenopmorph action, Alien Wars returned to Glasgow for the 99/2000 winter season. The venue chosen was the SECC in Glasgow which had operational problems of its own due to it being outside of the busy city centre and therefore not attracting passing visitors. The attraction was still very successful and when it closed in 2000, nobody knew where the show would appear next. Or even if it would appear at all.

2006 - War spin offs
Although not an official Alien War project, a similar style attraction opened at the National Space Centre in Leicester for their annual Sci Fi weekends. Alien Encounter was a charity event created by long term Alien and Alien War fans including the UK Garrison, and Harry Harris (a big Aliens fan who owns a massive collection of memorabilia from the films and worked as concept designer on the London show). The attraction was an adults only event which played very much like a mini Alien War with gung ho marines, very loud guns and some super scary aliens ready to attack at any time!
The original Alien War creative team of John and Gary were not behind this new version but allowed Harry to use a similar concept and design as the event was raising money for charity.

2007 - Rumours of War
Rumours started appearing that the War was due to return. New concept designs appeared online and speculation became rife. But where would it be? Certain places around the UK were mentioned including the County Hall in London (now home to London Dungeon) and even a potential return to its original site (which was then hosting an exhibition about love and sex but would eventually be used for the ill fated Pasaje del Terror). None of these plans came to fruition, and the team went back to Scotland to regroup.

2008 - War hits Glasgow again!
In May 2008, at ScareCON it was announced that the war would be returning to Glasgow and take up residence in it’s original home at The Arches. Now built underground in the dark undeveloped cellar, the new attraction brought everything back except for the actual Aliens themselves. The owners of the original attraction held the license to use characters and mages from the original Ridley Scott movies but with the long term closure of the attraction, the movie studio permissions had lapsed.
Realising that the attraction could open in Glasgow without actual Xenomorphs, the new show was called Alien Wars and featured similar shaped Aliens along with many of the key elements form the original show (including the now infamous elevator scene). See below for a review of the 2008 show.
The attraction had only planned a short run but due to phenomenal success, was extended into spring 2009 before heading off on tour again. When they left the abandoned cellar area underneath, The Arches was stripped of any alien style artefacts and by the time Ghosts of Christmas moved in later that year – the only evidence that it had ever been there were a few beaten up oil drums that the alien used to throw around!

2009 - War takes Liverpool!
During the run in Glasgow, the Alien war team was busy exploring new opportunities for the franchise and was still investigating potential sites back in London. Discussions were held with 20th Century Fox to return the character license to the attraction and once the Glasgow contract was up, the attraction found a temporary home at the Spaceport science museum in Wirral.
The new show introduced the concept of an alien artefact that had been placed on display at the museum. The artefact arrived in a barrage of publicity with armed guards and a foreboding security presence.. Unfortunately, being based in a family friendly science museum hampered the popularity of the event and it was difficult to recreate the whole alien experience between the daytime exhibits and visitors. The attraction closed quietly in March 2010.

2010 - War on the Golden Mile
In 2010 things were looking promising for the Alien franchise with a new permanent base in Blackpool, one of the UK’s biggest tourist destinations. Although not as industrial and grimy feeling as the Glasgow show, the now named Alien Attack condensed many of the key story elements into one dark and scary experience. With such a small area to fill, many of the corridoors were extremely narrow and claustrophobic.
Unfortunately the entrance to the venue was tucked away just off the main Blackpool strip and suffered from a sheer lack of footfall. Guests had to be dragged off the main promenade to find the entrance and without the marketing draw of the original alien characters and design, people were unsure as to the true nature of the attraction
Alien Attack closed at the end of the season and did not re-open in 2011.

2012 - War renewed!
With the renewed interest in the Alien franchise due to the blockbuster movie Prometheus, it was a perfect time to resurrect the war and try and return it to its spiritual home. The new show was a joint production with the Arches venue and the original creators and understandably leaned more towards the visuals prevalent throughout the new film. The new attraction was still an unofficial one with the marines and aliens resembling characters from the movies, but being suitably different to avoid any copyright issues.

2013 - War Renamed
The new show never quite managed to recreate the panic and excitement of previous versions and the attraction's own Facebook page was taken down in December amid a flurry of negative comments and reviews. It seemed that too many people remembered the original show and didn't like the new changes or the fact that these were not official HR Geiger Aliens. Soon after the show was rebranded to Alien Apocalypse: The Final Encounter and a closing date of April 14th was announced.

2017 - Clone War
With the launch of the latest film in the franchise - Alien Covenant, Madame Tussauds London have announced that they will be adding Alien Escape - a new scare attraction experience. We can confirm that the original development team from Alien War are not involved in this new show in any way.

With the launch of Alien Escape, the future of the Alien War franchise is unknown at this point. We can only hope to see it return somewhere else. The original creators still have the distribution rights for the original characters from 20th Century Fox for this region so could realistically bring back the real Xenemorphs anytime soon. All we can do is wait and wonder...

I NEVER get scared on horror tours! Been to many where Ive actually annoyed the hell out of those performing as I just cant get past the logic and cheesecore! But Alien Wars was terrifying and when I werent scared I was totally hyped up and so very anxious! JOB DONE!
Very scary
Went to Alien wars 25 years ago, and I remember it still today! An excellent thematic tour with marines, facehuggers and the terrifying Alien. Highly recommend

Very scary
Went through several times in Glasgow during original run. This included once during the Star Trek con in July. We went through in a group, including several Klingons and a Terminator, and Richard Arnold (advisor on TNG). The Alien War guys pulled out all the stops and we had a fantastic time, including Klingons going toe-to-toe with xenomorphs and us firing phasers (ineffectively) which then attracted the attention of the xenomorphs.

Terrifying - As a massive fan, I just had to go to Alien War. 23 years on, I still talk about it!
Dark, claustrophobic and totally brilliant, amazing sets & sound effects and great actors. Colonial marines led a dozen of us, running and screaming around a research facility with escaped aliens on the loose. From the dark corridors, to the APC vehicle, to a Japanese tourist getting pulled out of the elevator by an alien, and being dragged screaming into the dark whilst smoke machines, strobe lights and pulse rifle fire completed the illusion. I would love to see Alien War have another attraction, with the advance in technology since the 90's we could be in for something jaw dropping.

Terrifying - I can't remember how much it was as it was over 20 years ago - but it was worth it.
The whole concept of role-play as an adult took on a completely new meaning when we were trapped with a group of Japanese tourists who were positively sh***ing themselves as we traversed the corridors of the Wutani emplacement.
The girl being dragged from the lift was a nice touch...
I would say that this is THE attraction that I recount time and time again to anyone who is an Alien fan...
Totally, unequivocally, brilliant.

So much fun, definatly had the blood pumping loved every minute of it. if i had anything bad to say is that it could be longer and more interactive.
I am a massive alien fan, and went to London just to go here , I went in thinking this will be fun , and within 3 minutes 10 people were trying to fit through a door only wide enough for 2 people at a push. The atmosphere that was created in the experience was superb and made for an unforgettable experience would love to visit again if it reopens! still got my t-shirt and still remember my heart pumping as we ran out into the foyer trying to get away from the alien that was trying to get into the escape capsule we were in!
Im a white guy and my mate Wayne is Black. When we came out of the other side, Wayne was whiter than me!!
This was the best horror attraction I ever attended, 20 years later I still recall the genius. The elevator stalled then dropped and opened. a monster grabbed a business man out of the elevator. The doors shut. A kid was screaming, maybe it was me. Marines led us down corridors, shooting, alarms ringing and glimpses of the monster. People in our group disappearing till we escaped. I wish I had the money to bring it to Times Square.
Heard about it years ago when it first hit Glasgow...i eventually got through and it was better than i expected...a lot more scary than i imagined. Went in twice that day and didnt want to leave!
Then i saw it at Blackpool and yet again i had to experience the whole thing yet again and I wasn't disappointed.....and i had just arrived!
Then i read of its farewell tour in Glasgow and i just had to experience the terror once again!
Loved it and when i tell friends etc they say they would love to try it themselves. Well worth it and more...deff 10/10.
Bring it back please guys!....it would work in Blackpool....if it was in "the pleasure beach"......if not....bring it home to Glasgow ...where it belongs!

Oh my god. Both times I went I almost peed myself. First time there were some cocky young guys who by the end of it were a dribbling mess. second time, in glasgow, when the hatch up above us opened and an alien reached in, i fell back, taking the assembled crowd with me. so fun. so terrifying.
I loved it, it was like being taken onto the set of Aliens, they had constructed false tunnels that you had to get on your hands and knees to go through. With smoke and eggs pulsating beside you. There was a definite industrial/military feel to the whole thing.
There was a couple of alien encounters where it jumped through a couple of doors.
It was more of a jump scare than an extended one, in the original setup you were taken through it mostly in the manner of a ghost train and then let out at the other side.
The marines are always shouting at you to move which can be a bit grating, it would be good if it was more paced, i.e. If they are leading you through and then the sh*t goes down.
There wasn't really any sort of exhibition to go along with it which I felt was lacking at the time.
I wish they would bring the original version back with the real costumes or even remade ones. With the technology available now they could even add some virtual projections/sets to it.

Terrifying - Absolutely need to bring this back! The most incredible, realistic, attraction I have ever experienced, it was like stepping straight into the film. No doubt health & safety would have something to say about people cramming through doors and running around together these days! Would have to introduce an at your risk notice. Costumes and set second to none.
Terrifying - Over 20 years later and I still talk about Alien War. I've been on a few other horror tours and nothing has ever come close to matching Alien. Regardless who went in they all came out the same, a gibbering, terrified wreck. You can remind yourself all you like that it's not real and it's just a man in a suit not an actual Alien, it won't help. Whilst you're there, with the alarms going off, the smoke, the darkness, the distant sounds of screams and gunfire and the excellent job done by the actors if you're not scared you're not human.
I'd dearly love for this to make a return. There are so many people in my life that never got to experience this and would be thrilled at the opportunity. That is, until they get in there, at which point they'd immediately regret that decision. I just hope the original creators know how amazing that was and how many fond memories

Alien Wars - Bournemouth
Terrifying - the best 20 minutes of terror I have ever encountered, to be scared to the point of a gibbering wreck

Terrifying - I'Il never forget standing in the queue waiting to enter the alien wars the soldier loudly and firmly telling us to stay by his side at all times keep quiet as the alien will hear us a bunch of guys were laughing as wee entered all of us not doing what exactly to expect a long dark corridor strobe lights dark and smoky like in the movie walking fast following the soldier he shouts get down my heart was pumping looking up and down the corridor its getting closer then there it was omfg wee all screamed and ran i couldn't get up fast enough people men jumping over me meanwhile my friend is holding onto the soldiers jacket for dear life she later told me lol. finally as i didn't look back got into a lift to be told it was approaching again omg the tension needles to say when the doors opened wee all scrambled out as fast as bloody possible it was scarily brilliant.
Scary
Absolutely loved it , almost one of the best experiences ever . If it ever comes back I'd be sure to visit and could imagine it would be even better now .

Very scary - I remember going through the alien corridors with my brother who had broken leg in a cast . Chains rattling lights flickering & at one point it’s the fastest I’ve ever seen anyone in crutches running!! Thankfully we made it to the lift it was talked about for years. Wow!
