Tomb Raider - The Live Experience - Review
Have you ever played any of the classic Tomb Raider games and thought "I would love to experience this for real?" Well now you can, as a brand new Tomb Raider live experience has just opened in London.
The 75 minute globe trotting adventure takes in multiple locations from the games and includes elements of immersive theatre, escape room challenges, physical adventures and more. Set in a massive multi level soundset, the attention to detail and theming in most of the rooms is incredible (although there are a couple of rooms where you would be advised not to look up at the bare ceilings above!)
Throughout the adventure we were guided by multiple actors who would explain in each room what we would need to do to collect the appropriate element spheres, that would be required to overcome the bad guys chasing us! Some of the rooms were just simple search and locate tasks, whilst others had more physical challenges or props that needed to be maneuvered.
Talking of physical challenges - there are two that left us quite surprised in this modern day of overcautious health and safety protocols. The first up was a full zip wiring experience where we literally had to just hang on to so as not to fall off. Although not a huge height to fall (and with appropriate crash matting underneath) we were surprised that we weren't harnessed to the slide in any way. The second one was the "leap of faith", which was a great way to test your bravery, but again we were surprised at the suggestion that we just fall backwards into the 10 foot drop. Cautious of landing strangely on our neck or backs, we decided to just jump feet first!
But of course all this puzzle solving and physical elements, were all a prelude to a large theatrical style confrontation between the bad guys and Lara Croft herself. The theming in this cavernous room was probably the most impressive of the whole experience and looked like something directly from the game or a movie!
All to soon we found ourselves on a plane heading back to London and were deposited into the main bar and event space. From here we were able to look down on other adventurers as they traversed part of the Costa Rican jungle.
All in - we thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience and think that the team have created a clever mix of puzzles, challenges and physical elements, that really capture the spirit of the computer games. Despite one particularly dark and claustrophobic section, which would scare some people, most of the experience is quite light hearted and fun and certainly throws a lot at each adventurer.
One final thing - you don't have to be a Tomb Raider fan to experience or appreciate this event. Yes you may catch some references throughout, but even the non gamers in our group understood the story and had a great time!
