Eternal Life at Tempo Bath - Review
Usually when we turn up at an escape room venue, we have to spend a few minutes looking for an anonymous door on a High St or industrial estate. Therefore we were quite surprised to arrive at the venue for Tempo to release that it is built in such an impressive looking building. The Temperance Hall was originally built in 1847 as a base for the Victorian temperance movement and has been utilised for various churches and religions over the years.
Which is why - when Tempo Bath purchased the building, they knew that the theme of their room would have to play into this background. As such, the twisted genius of "Eternal Life was created"
In the game, we were invited along to the mysterious Life Foundation, where we were due to be tested to discover the key to eternal life. With a few game instructions and the repeated assurance that this "isn't a cult" we stepped into a brightly lit room accompanied by cheery jazz style music. What could possibly go wrong? To say much else, would really ruin the story and surprises that played out over the next hour. The website does warn of some "mild PG scariness" and as you would expect with us playing - there were certainly some scary moments along the way!
One of the things that stood out in this game, was the really varied range of puzzles throughout. Yes there were a few padlocks and combinations to solve, but there were also a number of physical tasks, as well as some quite taxing logic tasks.
Of course - clues are available via a screen in the room if people are really stuck. A couple of times we got the methodology of a puzzle right but were doing something stupid like reading a number wrong or getting colours mixed up! Often it just needed a clean set of eyes to solve the puzzle and between the three of us - we remained busy throughout and escaped with just 3 minutes spare.
After we finished our game, we returned to the bright light of a sunny evening in Bath, where we were presented with a drink and a slice of cake. Not sure if every group gets this treatment, but it was a nice chance to chill after our game and discuss the interesting puzzles and challenges we had survived.
All in - we had a fantastic visit to Tempo Bath. The story and the setting was impressive, and the quality and diversity of the puzzles and activities really impressed us. With another room going to be built in the venue soon, we cant wait to come back and experience the new story when it opens. If it's even half as good as Eternal Life - it will still be amazing!
