ZombieLab at The Science Museum
The Science Museum in London is a vast sprawling venue with interesting exhibits and interactive elements around every corner. It's the sort of place that kids love to go to and not even realise they are learning. Unfortunately, most of the time, adults have to stand back and let the kids play!
Well for one night a month, the Museum opens for its "Lates" event. Admission is strictly over 18s only and every section is available, alongside themed talks and events and even a large number of bars serving alcohol.
The theme of January's event was ZombieLab: Grappling with Conciousness and an extensive programme of features were lined up including Dead of Night, Zombie Horde and Show of the Living Dead as well as fun zombie themed events such as Zombieoke, a costume competition and a Thriller dance class. In fact across the three hour event there were 33 different things to experience alongside the normal exhibits. And this was probably the biggest failing - there was just too much to do and it was impossible to even see half of what we wanted to.These Lates events are extremely popular (over 5000 people attended that night alone) and with some of the experiences only catering for small groups such as 20 people at a time, the queues for some of the more popular ones soon built up.
Throughout the night we managed to squeeze in a couple of different shows which were fun, but probably erred more on the side of science than entertainment. To be honest though - not that most people seemed to mind - as the bars were doing a roaring trade and many people were treating the whole event as a big social drink up!
If you love science and have a valid interest in any of the talks at future events, we would definitely recommend getting to the museum early and heading straight to the one show you really want to see. By the time we finished as the first group on Zombie Horde - the queue had built up to over 45 mins. The experience was a fun experiment into the nature of zombie hordes BUT not worth the long wait.
It was a shame as with the crowds everywhere and the sheer number of different experiences, we would have loved to have done more but just couldn't fit everything in.
