Zombie Manor House
Zombie Manor House is the new zombie survival experience from the team at Zed Promotions. Having received critical acclaim for their Zombie Shopping Mall in Reading, the team looked around for another exciting venue. When they found Daresbury Hall near Warrington they knew they were onto a winner.
Upon arrival, we were met by a small military unit simply called 'Grey Squad' who kitted us up with everything we needed to take part. After a safety briefing, we were put through our paces in Close Quarters Combat and Weapons Training. The Airsoft guns we were given look and feel like the real thing and despite firing plastic projectiles, these things appear that they can do a lot of damage. We were given important safety advice but time is short and there is a lot to remember. As we were led into the unknown, a sense of realisation set it. This was much more than just a 'game'. Things were about to get serious.
We were impressed by the amazing location and throughout our time we were in awe at just what an incredible venue this is. The Manor House is only a small part of the experience as you are forced to explore medical research facilities, woodlands and even a seemingly deserted swimming pool. Everything feels so real! Pitch dark basements lit only by torchlight, smoke filled buildings (and we mean FILLED) and makeshift morgues give a total feeling of immersion as you stare in wonder at your dilapidated surroundings. You genuinely feel out of contact with the 'real world' and are very aware that even though the building is deserted, you are certainly NOT alone!
At various points throughout your mission you come to dead ends and have to double back on yourself going backwards and forwards through various rooms, searching for clues or simply trying to find a way out that wasn't a zombie filled corridor. Answers aren't given to you on a plate and even though there's team leaders to make sure that you stay safe and provide some direction it really does feel like you're playing your role in the mission's success. This was vital in the feeling of immersion, and the actors playing 'Grey Squad' leaders were totally believable. They kept calm, they directed, but you did all the work. They knew their roles and characters well, and played them to a tee. Your nerves are really put to test as you have to tiptoe within inches of the zombies you've shot down knowing that any second they could reanimate and grab hold of you. Again, the roles of the zombies were played amazingly. The cast work such a large area with an amazing level of skill. We were almost constantly under threat, which is no mean feat when you consider the amount of space that they have to cover. Also, at no point whatsoever did we catch a sneaky glimpse of an 'out of character' zombie running across a field, or getting to their next point. Even spotting them in the corner of our eyes, a good distance away, they committed to the role. This gave a level of fear that we really didn't expect. There is no down time at Zombie Manor House!

Ammunition is in very short supply and although we didn't run out we did feel like we had to be careful reserving as many rounds as we could. The clever ones in the group counted how many rounds they had left, we had not been quite so clever and were left constantly wondering when we would be out of ammunition. As a result, at some points we were quite happy to let others in the team go on ahead as we cowered towards the back of the group.
As our mission came to a thrilling climax, the zombies became faster and regenerated quicker, making us even more tense as we were backed up to a waters edge. The finale had us literally running for safety, pulses racing and screaming for help. A perfect ending!
Looking back, the experience felt like a cross between all of your favourite scenes in horror movies and zombie survival games. You are forced to think about safe entry into unknown rooms, securing and clearing each location as you go which further ramped up the tension. Zombie Manor House isn't just about shooting guns at zombies – it's far more clever than that!
At almost £100 per person to take part, many of you will be wondering is it worth the price? Quite simply, yes! It's one of the most immersive experiences we've experienced to date, the interactivity and feeling of separation from the outside world makes you feels like absolutely anything could happen. From start to finish your mission lasts for approximately 3 hours and it's virtually non stop (make sure you go to the bathroom first, zombies don't wait for you to pop to the loo!) You are encouraged to take water with you, and after those smoky rooms, you definitely needed it. They were incredibly intense!
Everyone who we met that is involved with Zombie Manor House showed complete enthusiasm and we believe this is what keeps the experience fresh. It's easy to see that these guys love what they do and it's a pleasure to be able to be a part of such a unique and exciting day. What excites us most is the sheer flexibility that the venue affords the creators meaning that the possibilities for the attraction are virtually limitless. We can say with total confidence that with the drive and passion of the team, the skill of the actors and their ability to pick exceptional locations, we see a bright future for this constantly evolving attraction.
