York Maze Hallowscream - 2012 Review
Hallowscream at York Maze contained one of our favourite attractions in 2011, and as the final stop in this year's Halloween itinerary we were looking forward to being scared some more. Despite the fact that Halloween had already passed three days before, the park was extremely busy and had a great atmosphere...
The Symetery

Like most parks, the bad weather had compromised the growth of a decent maize maze so The Symetery was introduced as a replacement for Curse of the Corn. The marketing hinted at groups being taken out of their comfort zone and being separated during the course of the attraction and as we arrived at the entrance we were all given white masks to wear, instantly restricting our vision and taking away our personal identities.
Early on we were completely separated and ushered into a room alone which really built up the tension and anticipation. Sadly, almost immediately we were told to leave and we just rejoined our group. After this, groups seemed to be batched very quickly, which unfortunately seemed to leave the attraction feeling more like a scare zone as we found ourselves missing some scares due to the volume of people going through a section at any one time. On the positive side though, the attraction was a good length and was an interesting attempt to do something different.

Outbreak

After the success of last year's See No Evil, The Outbreak followed a similar concept with a combination of pre recorded video mixed with live actor interaction in the auditorium. The actors were very enthusiastic and at times the whole room came alive with lasers and sounds etc. The Outbreak was something very different and we really enjoyed it - especially the genuine sense of panic at the end.
The Carnevil

This attraction was definitely not one for anyone with a fear of clowns and with one of our group terrified of the creatures we knew this would be an interesting experience! The whole maze works really well with numerous scares from unexpected places. The mischievous clowns caused a great deal of laughter and scares and we all had a fun time throughout (even the Coulrophobe in our group!
With so many clown attractions available this Halloween, this was one that certainly delivered something different, with many interesting rooms and scenes. It is a credit to the creators as to how much this clown maze is better than the others out there as it remained lively and fresh throughout.

Barnaggedon

Having saved the best for last again, we headed for Barnaggedon. Once again, it was full of mutants and creatures hiding in dark shadows and we were subjected to constant scares. This maze is filled with terrifying creatures, loud and sudden effects and some crazy ideas. Having made our way through crawl spaces, outdoor sections, strobe lighting etc, hardly a second went by when something or someone wasn't attacking us!
Outside the mazes, there were roaming actors all around the event which worked well, giving unexpected scares when walking from attraction to attraction and providing some good fun queue line entertainment!
Due to the permanent infrastructure of the catering, shops, toilets and attractions, York Maze's Hallowscrem feels more professional than most Halloween attractions and somewhere that can genuinely claim itself to be a proper "scream park"
