Review -Woodland of Terror
The Woodland of Terror is a live overnight scare camping experience located in desolate woodland in Shrewsbury. The site has access to medieval ruins and monuments built over 200 years ago with one of the prime features being an underground cave system that legend has it was used by King Arthur and the Knights of the Templar!
Upon arrival we had chance to settle into our surroundings with a warming cup of tea and a safety briefing about the night’s activities. Soon we were left to fend for ourselves and wait for the start of the scares. It seemed like quite a long time before anything started to happen, but when it did, the sudden action startled us all. The opening scenes involving a half-naked victim felt almost too real to be comfortable!
The ensuing chaos was a perfect mix of confusion and scare as, at turns we all became the focus of the bad guys’ attention. At times we were bagged and hooded and pushed to the ground – if we hadn’t actually signed up for this we might have believed we were genuinely about to be mugged and murdered!
With this original menace finally gone, we then had to compete in a number of different treasure hunts through parts of the site. Following a trail in the pitch dark with just a small flashlight was terrifying and of course the organisers had “things” out there waiting for us! The side missions built up until we got to the terrifying old cave system. Given a tiny tea light and separated from our group – we were forced to head inside alone. It was so dark, and the tea light was no help apart from letting people know where we were!
The intense darkness in these caves made it one of the most atmospheric walk throughs we have ever done and with live actors at every turn, it was genuinely terrifying. At one point we could just about make out 3 paths and all we could hear was a chain saw revving in the distance. Making a choice was very difficult!
Once the main scares had finished we went back to the camp for goodies and beer, as well as a chance to warm up with some hot drinks. This also gave us time to speak with the actors as they joined us back at camp. It was a nice relaxed atmosphere after the earlier scares.
Of course after all the excitement of the adventures we had some time to actually rest in our tents and try to catch some sleep. Although the event does promise some periods where you will be able to sleep - these sections seem very brief when of course you are rudely awoken from your slumber by something outside (or even inside) your tent!
All in – it was a truly exciting night in an outstanding location. Despite the slow start, the team
kept the scares and the thrills up all through the night with some brilliantly scary actors keeping us on our toes. We’d love to do it again – if only to go through those terrifying tunnels just one more time!!
