Vaults Live
It's rare that we visit a city or location without already knowing what attractions we can visit, so we were genuinely surprised on a trip to Dublin to find a newly opened experience called Vaults Live.
It is clear that the attraction has been lovingly "inspired" by the classic Dungeon attractions and follows a very similar theme of character acting, special effects and historical story telling, all with its tongue firmly in its cheek!
As you would expect - the stories are all based on local history and characters including Molly Malone - the subject of a local Irish ditty and Bram Stoker the author of Dracula who lived in the City. Bram Stoker was certainly the scariest of the 6 stories, which is understandable due to the appearance of a certain famous literary vampire, but also mixed in some great humour especially with the arrival of the local Garda (Police).
There was also a lot of audience interaction throughout all the shows, with the cast making quite a few jokes at the audience's expense, which helped keep us engaged throughout. We even had to sing several times during the experience! One thing we also noticed was a lot of modern day references thrown into the script and this was most prevalent with the viking scene. Our host for this was called Ikea and so you can imagine how many flat pack furniture references were made as well as lyrics from a certain other Swedish export. Mama Mia - here we go again! It was all genuinely funny and mixed perfectly with the actual historical facts.
We have to praise all the actors involved as they were really putting their all into their scenes and delivering really strong performances throughout. It never felt like they were just reciting their lines, which must be difficult when performing the same scenes day in and day out.
One final thing to mention was the level of theming in each of the 6 rooms. Clearly a lot of money has been spent on the design and each room was filled with intricate attention to detail, all complemented by an impressive lighting system. The atmosphere in each of the rooms was really immersive - and only really let down by the blank corridors and stairways between scenes. It's a small complaint as it was clear that the effort and budget has been directed at the main shows.
We had a real mix of ages in our group and everyone really enjoyed it. A couple of teenage girls were terrified whenever an actor even came anywhere near them, and even we jumped a couple of times during the hour long show. Certainly our whole group seemed to be enjoying the experience and everyone was getting involved with the scenes and the stories throughout.
We started this review by mentioning the iconic Dungeons and although it is unfair to to keep comparing them, it is clear that Vaults Live will appeal to the same audience. With some gruesome horror, funny scenes and historical scares, it's almost like we visited Dublin Dungeon, but with completely new scripts and characters and not re-using scenes from other shows. As such it is a totally new and exciting experience in its own right, and one that shouldn't be missed when you're visiting Dublin.
