Tulleys Shocktoberfest 2007
The Tulley’s Farm Spooktacular had been on my ‘must do’ for a very long time, and this year I finally got to go and see what this event was all about. Our group almost had the place to ourselves, what with it being opening night. This was certainly a good thing, as we only had an hour to explore the attractions on offer.
Tulleys certainly don’t scrimp on Halloween decor. It was superb and the stuff was dotted all over the show. There are vampires, grave yards, clapped out cars and scarecrows amongst a whole host of other things.
So, onto the main attractions:
The Haunted Hayride
What with this being my first hayride experience, anticipation levels were in overdrive as I honestly didn’t know what to expect. The tractor finally arrived, the onboard sound track whirred into action and off we went on our merry way into the dark woods ahead. What then follows is a tour de force of elaborate set pieces, fire effects, props that have a mind of their own and some enthusiastic scare actors including a chainsaw wielding freak who decided to hitch a ride on out trailer. Scenes included Area 51, a haunted scrap yard and land of the dinosaurs. Quite a bizarre mix, but they blend together nicely. I felt that a few extra scare actors wouldn’t have gone amiss, and a finale of some sort would have been the icing on the cake for this otherwise fantastic attraction. We were told that a few things were yet to be added but even so, we had fun anyway
The Field of Screams
The Field of screams is a creepy place indeed. The scarecrows might have packed their bags, but this time crazed circus animals are on the loose, hiding amongst the towering corn and waiting for their next victim to walk by. Those victims being us!
Once through the main entrance our group was welcomed by a clown warning us of the dangers ahead and then comically mocking us for wanting to go inside. After sending us on our way we encountered a number of weird creatures and characters before being sent down even darker twisting pathways, which contained a few hidden special effects and actors.
Upon entering a pitch-black indoor section, the only way out was by feeling around in front of you using the netted walls as a guide. It was pretty unnerving as there was something banging on the roof the whole time you are in there. Unfortunately the finale wasn’t quite ready, so our departure from the maze was somewhat of an anti climax. Still, the Field of Screams was my personal favourite of the three main attractions.
The Creepy Cottage is a short but sweet haunted house walk through. The sets are impressive with amazing attention to detail. Props and visual effects provide the majority of ‘scares’ and there is a particularly clever trick where it looks as though there is a deep chasm in the floor.
There were 3 actors inhabiting the dark twisting corridors and ornate rooms, providing a few ‘family friendly’ scares.
My hat goes off to the Tulleys crew for organising such a fine Halloween event. The Spooktacular is aimed at families, so an equal balance of fun, laughs and scares are the order of the day here.
Thanks for the review Carl! We are still hoping to make it to Tulleys ourselves this year but its good to see that things haven’t changes and its still as fun and scary as it used to be!
