Toy Terror
Hidden away in Newtown mid-Wales is a little production company called Bitter Sweet Productions. Their first foray into the world of scare was a ghost walk in the Powys region last year, but it is this year's offering which is set to put them on the map. In association with Powys Council, the team have opened a little pop-up attraction in a disused shop unit, and despite a low budget and minimal production time scale- the end result actually shows a lot of promise. In a time when other companies are trying to find new extreme ways to scare, we have an attraction that has gone back to the basics of what a scare-event actually should be, and builds up from there.
But does it work? Mostly it does. The front of the shop suffers from a lack of theming and does not really give a sense of the event waiting inside. Saying that, the internal areas look more impressive especially considering they are primarily dressed with old sheets and bits of netting. A basic but effective narrative was set up by our panic-stricken host, before we were led into darkness to face the terrors within the twisted toy shop ahead. The simple set up works and the scares combined with the grotesque and gory settings all built up to a heart-racing high-impact finale.
You can tell it's a small shop space, with a limited budget, with a young cast - primarily 16yrs old, but overall it is an impressive, and more importantly, scary little maze. While it has had only a reasonable amount of support over the 4 day run, (primarily caused by a lack of marketing materials and public awareness), the actual 5 minute attraction is worth a visit. If only to see how things began, as it is clear that with a bit of funding this team could go a long way.
