The Street by Immersive Events at HMP Shepton Mallet
The Street is the latest scare attraction from Immersive Events – the team behind Shrewsbury Prison Scream Park and its associated zombie experiences. Set in the buildings of HMP Shepton Mallet – we were expecting something in keeping with the prison theme but instead, the mad fools have literally created a “street” and the experience flows from building to building.
But we are getting ahead of ourselves. First up the queue line gave a subtle hint as to the date and setting of the event. Along the walls, in chronological order, were portraits of all the US presidents that terminated in a gold framed photo of Ronald Reagan. It didn’t take a genius to work out that we were heading into 1980s America, but we did have to explain it to the slightly drunk couple behind us who worked out they were American Presidents but wondered where “that black dude was”. It put a smile on our face that stayed with us throughout the show!
Once inside, our first encounter with a resident of the Street, was in the local fleapit cinema, where we were invited to sit down and enjoy a movie. The 80s setting was reinforced with some period Pepsi adverts (we’re old enough to remember the first time of course) and a subtle but fun advert to their upcoming Die Hard live experience. All too soon the peace was shattered and we were ordered to get to the safe zone.
What followed was a number of impressive scripted scenes in different buildings of the street punctuated by some zombie attacks along the way. Our highlights being the smarmy barber who was willing to cut a bit more than our hair and the cheeky barfly who ended up drunkenly serenading his “silver Michael J Fox”. Along the way we passed through some very detailed sets and scenes which included a number of fun animatronics – all made in house by the talented design team.
Once we had made our way to the safe zone, the tone started to get a bit darker as the military and scientists tried to get control of the virus. The actors in these final scenes, including the general and the doctor were totally believable and really helped build the tension for the big finale. Obviously, we don’t want to spoil that, but we were chased out the door at the end. Refreshingly – without a chainsaw in sight.
Once we got our breath back we headed upstairs to the second attraction- The Dark – a simple yet effective dark maze where all we had was a rope to follow. The scares came thick and fast and the actors were working really hard to keep us screaming throughout.
We really enjoyed both experiences at The Street. We were genuinely surprised at the level of detail in the sets and the storytelling, and for a first venture at the venue, it was really impressive. The crowds on opening night were all enjoying it as much as us, and we look forward to seeing more scare events coming to the prison soon!
