The Spooky Ship
The Spooky Ship is back for its second year on the SS Great Britain in Bristol. Produced by the Bristol Old Vic, the attraction is a site-specific piece of promenade theatre that takes place on, around, and even underneath the historic Brunel masterpiece.
Following a standard tour guide onto the ship, we were soon pulled into a story of lost love, evil doings and the king of the underwater realm. As we stopped at each scene, a well-scripted vignette would play out as the ghosts told us more about their experiences on the ship, and what had led them to haunt it.
Some of the character scenes were quite lighthearted like the "ladies" in the first class dining saloon or the "fix it" man in the boiler room, while others were more tragic and spooky. Although not really a scare attraction as such, there were a number of jumps throughout the whole show, alongside some stunning set pieces such as the bride walking on the water at the prow of the ship.
The cast were all totally believable, with a quality of acting we would expect on stage and not at a scare event. Each character easily worked the group to ensure perfect delivery of the story and to create full involvement from the audience.
Our only one real downside was the final scene, that sort of finished with no big conclusion. It wasn’t obvious we were at the end of the story until we were led out by our guide and thanked for coming. With the location available to them – they easily could have created a louder, more impressive finale to give us something to talk about as we left.
Moving so many groups of people round such an impressive venue must have been a logistical nightmare and we must commend the team for putting on such a professional show. We had a great time on the Spooky Ship and although the event was definitely more highbrow than your standard scare event, we absolutely loved it.
