The Neath
We’ve all made deals with the devil. “I’d give anything for this" or “I'd sell my soul for that...”.Well, The ‘Neath is your chance to wipe the slate clean and repay your debt by taking a drink with a host of demons. The teams behind multiple different interactive experiences bring together a band of devils, led by the fallen angel Azazel, in an atmospheric subterranean pop-up bar.
The Neath is part modern mystery style entertainment and part voyeuristic story telling, all served with a big splash of fun (mostly at other people’s expense). This is not the type of event we tend to cover, as it wasn't necessarily scary, but the theme was dark enough to tempt us down for a drink. We're certainly glad we did!
.
The Cavern room at The Vaults has been transformed into a dramatic members bar, complete with a variety of fascinating and creepy regulars, and swarming with mischievous demons who put us in mind of the fairies from “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”. During the evening, us punters were encouraged to divulge our sins to these creatures and the best storytellers were rewarded with a drink from one of seven goblets to absolve us of our collective sins and pay our debt to the devil. Throughout, we were regaled with the regular’s tales of lust, envy, greed and pride, each containing a clue to achieve another goblet.
As the time ticked on the mood turned from mischievous to menacing as the playful devils were replaced by more threatening wolf-type creatures. The whole event was a cracking concept and psychologically thrilling. When asked what my worst sin was my mind went completely blank. I was being poked and stroked by a couple of demons while the hunky, gravel-voiced Azazel interrogated me in front of my grinning partner. Note to self: do not take your boyfriend on a ScareTOUR date! As a finale, a confrontation between the lead actors guaranteed a memorable end to over an hour of entertainment.
Overall the team achieved what they set out to provide: a fun, challenging immersion experience with a well stocked (and for London, inexpensive) bar. Everything from the theatrical elements, setting and acting were all of the highest quality. The only drawback as always is the very short run. If The Neath reappears any time in the future - you’ll definitely find me propping up the bar!
