The Haunting
The Haunting is a brand new show from a new scare entertainment company, Scare Corp. Tagged as a ghost hunt with a difference we were in high hopes as to what the event would offer. The location was called The Old Morgue and sinister visions of spooky locations were conjured up in our heads. The venue was in fact a charity shop which took a bit of finding (perhaps an A-board outside would have helped us out) but, as we were to discover, it was the the rooms located under the shop where the majority of the action was to take place.
We gathered around some tables inside the shop whilst our host went looking for our guide. We were left to our own devices for a while, casually checking Facebook and chatting amongst ourselves when a ghoulish looking character appeared from behind the kitchen area and began to tell us about the apparent haunted history of the location. We had a number of encounters during this period from strange old men through to a strange "harlot" in the corner of the room.
With different excursions up and down stairs we began to find out more and more by interacting with the ghosts around us, until a theatrical sleight of hand was pulled that left us thinking who was this sinister, evil character we had been talking to for the last hour?
As the show built to a climax we spent even more time with each ghost and while being warned that the ghosts could not harm us - we were shocked as something major happened that seemed to break these rules. At this shocking finale we were told to head back upstairs for the final time as the show was now over.
So, what did we think to The Haunting? It was very much an interactive, theatrical performance piece with a few scares thrown in rather than a full on scare attraction experience. The show was long (3 hours) and relies heavily on the guest to get involved, interact with the characters and take part in the show. We did wonder what would have happened if the group was not made up of people like us that would get “stuck in”, roll with it and take part as some of the key scenes simply would not work. The make-up was of a good standard and the enthusiasm of the team was clear from the start: they worked for free and threw themselves into their roles and gave a good performance throughout. The areas located downstairs were very eerie and atmospheric and are genuinely haunted so the location was perfect for a ghost hunt style performance. The team at Scare Corp have big plans for future events in and around the Hull area so keep a look out for them and check them out if you get the chance.
