Review - The Experiment
“Can your team survive or will you shout the safe word?” That was one of the questions JGDR Entertainments asked in the advertising for their new event - The Experiment at the Chocolate Factory Studios in Hull, where teams of four were invited to see if they could handle the challenges that lay ahead.
Our team were playing on each other’s fears and phobias on the drive over to the event, wondering who might have to use the safe word or who might pull out altogether. It’s fair to say we were a little nervous.
Once there an introductory video from a professor who was conducting various research trials was played. It was quickly interrupted though by freaks from the local carnival who hade taken over the professor’s lab and his work. Worryingly the shutter over the entrance dropped down and we're trapped. The freaks wanted to play and put us through challenges of their own..
Each team of four takes on four challenges and sat in a pitch black room we were forced to decide amongst ourselves who would take on each challenge with no clue as to what it might be. If you couldn’t make a decision, the freaks would decide for you.
We remained sat in complete darkness for about twenty minutes whilst different team members were taken to be tested, and we certainly had time to wonder about what was happening to them. Once they were back, we had tie to select the next person to take on a challenge. All the whilst the Games Mistress from the carnival and a silent, doll like character played out short scenes over a speaker, or to force us into doing bizarre things!
Before we had arrived, we had already decided what order our team were going to take on the challenges, as we certainly didn’t want the carnival crazies picking for us! We had made our choices but if you hadn't then they would have!
For us though this gave away the lay out of the two hours we were going to be there and if you took the first or last challenge you then spent the rest of the time waiting in darkness for the rest of the team to do theirs. It was designed to make you lose sense of time, and it certainly did, but we had already worked out how the night was going to unfold which was a shame as it took away some of the anticipation.
The climax of the Experiment was that we had a sudden challenge to escape. This was great fun as we got to see all the characters that our other team mates had met during their experiences and was a nice high energy finale with a lot of actors. All in, we enjoyed our visit and it was great to be able to speak to the team afterwards. We just felt that being able to observe team members doing their challenge or some form of mini challenges in between would have helped alleviate some of the waiting around and would have and kept all of completely intrigued throughout.
The Experiment was also a fundraiser for something permanent that JGDR are working on; a museum dedicated to Hull’s dark history, that will feature actors and different themed mazes! We really look forward to visiting the museum and the numerous other events the team have coming up.
