Review - The Big Day
The Big Day is the inaugural scare experience run by the Midlands Attraction Company, a new collaboration of theme park enthusiasts based in Uttoxeter in the West Midlands. The Big Day was marketed as a ‘scare experience’ based on a Wedding gone wrong and it wasn’t long before the Bride became a Bridezilla!
The Big Day was set inside a small community centre in the heart of the Town, however any regulars of the centre wouldn’t recognise it. Although no changes made to the exterior, the inside appeared completely different. The initial darkness of the reception area along with screams from visitors within the attraction had the team excited to enter. Once receiving our safety briefing, it was time to enter the attraction.
The first two scenes were very theatrical - we were measured and fitted for out suits whilst being warned of a ‘strange’ vicar and witnessed a marriage that concluded with a stabbing of the groom by a possessed bride! These two rooms set the scene for the rest of the attraction, with the first scene having a jocular vibe to bring you into a false sense of security and the second scene being very in your face!
The middle part of the attraction was a generic ‘hooded maze’ where we were made to follow a rope in complete darkness. Although we understand space was an issue within the attraction, some of the team felt a little disappointed that a bulk of the maze was hooded. Although the hooded technique can be considered terrifying to some guests, they seem to become the Marmite of scare attraction enthusiasts, you either love them or hate them. That being said, we must commend the team for having an action packed hooded section, loud bangs, water effects and multiple actors ensured the scene kept lively and didn’t become stale like other hooded attractions.
The finale scene was set in the actual kitchen of the community centre, this ensured the scene was the most visually impressive with a genuinely concerned chef who wanted to get us to safety. A nice little chase out scene was an enjoyable finale with strobes and sound being used effectively.
We must commend the Midlands Attraction Company for their debut event. It had aspects and techniques to make a solid attraction. The only down side to the event was that in sections you could tell the budget was minimal. The finale and hooded sections were well executed, and the team had great acting talent throughout the entire attraction. However, unfortunately the first two scenes were set in gazebos which gave the beginning of the experience a budgeted feel. However we understand the team only have 2 hours to create the attraction each evening, making it difficult to use anything else but gazebos to create rooms.
The Big Day was overall a fun first attempt for a brand new company when time and money is against them. The execution of the event was professional however we felt at certain times it lacked quality impact scares. We wish the team the best of luck in the future and after a well-attended first outing, they will hopefully have a bigger budget when moving forward with their next event.
