Syndrome - by Massacre Productions
Syndrome was the debut attraction for Massacre Productions and was held for just one night at Winstanley College in Wigan. With just a small budget and not much time to set up, the team faced quite a tough challenge - but did they pull it off?
The theme of the show was that we were to take part in some harmless experiments by a laboratory doctor. But of course, by the time we arrived at the Billinge Laboratory, something had gone wrong and some of the patients had been affected. We were warned to be on our guard at all times.
What followed was a simple but effective metal fence maze, but through clever use of silhouette and shadows it felt a lot more populated than it really was. As we made our way through we met different patients - some more helpful than others and it was quite fun not knowing who to trust. One memorable scene in particular, was the X ray room in the middle of the show. We were just admiring some of the detail and didn't notice the raving mad patient that was caged in the room too. When they started thrashing to get out to attack us we really jumped. To finish off, the strobe lighting in the maze finale was very disorientating and the actors worked the space well to make us believe there were more than just 2 people in there.
Given the tight timing and spacing restrictions by the venue, this was a good first show from Massacre productions. The 4 actors involved were very impressive especially as we found out afterwards that this was their first time acting in a scare event. Their enthusiasm was contagious and they stayed in character at all times.
So, Massacre Productions have giving us a teaser of what we can expect from them in 2013. Hopefully future events won't have the tight restrictions of this one and the team can really let go and have some creative fun.
