Review - Spooky World 2023
We need to get one thing out the way from the start. It's something everyone mentions about the event and it would be churlish of us not to mention them, but after years of visiting Spooky World - we are still amazed that all the attraction signs are bright yellow. We find it weird that an attraction that has some great logos on its website, has chosen this ethic, but we must commend them, and say that the attractions, at least, are visible from a distance!
We visited the park on a quiet night, which meant we were able to get around all the mazes quickly, We started with The Institute - a simple strobe and fencing maze which really shouldn't have worked, but it did. The pathway through the attraction was an up and down linear route through the room with very little variation. This meant that we could see through the whole attraction at any one point, which just accentuated the sheer number of actors in the maze. Everywhere we looked there were characters climbing the walls, snarling and screaming at us. The actors totally made this experience a great start to the night!
So after leaving on a high, we entered Carnevil for another maze of intense scares led by very lively actors. Remember this was at nearly 10 o'clock at night - and the crew was as wild and energetic as if they had just started their shift. Although there is nothing original in this maze, the actors once again lifted it into a terrifyingly fun experience with scares throughout.
Below Decks is the newest attraction at the park and is populated with zombie pirates. The park have done their best to create an authentic pirate vibe, but we really feel that is maze was missing an overriding soundtrack. We were supposed to be on a ship but we walked through the maze with the silence only broken by the actors. A dramatic Pirates of the Caribbean style soundtrack, or even some sound effects such as creaking timber, seagulls the sound of the sea etc, would have worked. But as with the previous mazes, the actors really made up for it.
Field of Screams was probably the most confusing attraction of the night. In the past the "field" actually took part in a corn field - so the name made sense. But there was no corn this year - instead we were left to wander around a wooden maze full of actors. Despite the name we had a great time in this maze. The actors did a great job of tormenting us throughout and we got sent down multiple dead ends several times.
Haunted House has moved to a new location at the park, and we are sorry to report was easily the weakest maze of the night (well at least in terms of design.) The rooms were some of the barest of the whole park with plain black walls, and minimal furniture. It would seem that a simple visit to a charity shop or a clearance sale could have helped here, as bookcases were empty, kitchen dressers stood unadorned and each room had the most basic element of theming possible. Which meant it was impressive that the actors still managed to get a number of great scares throughout our visit.
Our final walk through maze was Slaughterhouse which has been a favorite of ours for years. This maze has some of the more elaborate theming of the event, but this was secondary to the amazing acting throughout. The cast of this maze were simply stunning and spent the whole maze just taunting, flirting and threatening us from beginning to end. This is also a really long attraction, which seemed never ending as the cast just kept attacking us, over and over. It was scary, uncomfortable and hilariously funny.
We then finished the night on the hayride which had a number of fun interactions from actors, that infamous power hose and a great foam cannon that left us laughing as we got covered from head to toe. The trailer finishes with the infamous Tunnel of Terror that gave us a number of great scares which were then extended once we escaped, as every actor from across the park came to greet us as we left the attraction. In fact they even escorted us back to the car park as we left the park!
So - if you've read all of the above - it is pretty obvious how we feel about Spooky World. The event really doesn't help itself with its basic set deigns and the garish yellow signs, but it one hundred percent makes up for this in the passion and liveliness of the acting crew. The highlight of each attraction was the engaging performances from all the staff, who had us laughing, screaming and squirming in equal measure. We don't know what Spooky World put in their water - but these actors had us EVERY time - perfectly embodying their maze ethic (pirate, clown, hillbilly etc) whilst ad-libbing, scaring and generally being the best scare actor troupe we have seen so far this Halloween. We can only imagine what this team could do if they were given a set of mazes with the theming and budget of some of the bigger events in the UK
All in - we really had a fantastic time at Spooky World - well done to all the actors involved!

Scary - a good mixture of different scares we loved it. From jump scares to being immersed into uncomfortable environments and situations. Overall a good night out. The actors were amazing! food was good and we enjoyed sitting by the fire with a hot chocolate.
Very scary - The value for money could be slightly better however from years of going, it has improved and love the new outside maze !
Slaughter house seemed extra scary this year and has to be my favourite. I loved the new haunted house as I think the theme was so cool felt like a Tim Burton theme.
If I had to pick a least favourite it would be Below Deck. I just don’t think pirates are scary

Review - Spooky World 2020
It's 2020 and the big yellow signs are back! We're not sure why Spooky World use such plain signage for their mazes - especially when they have well designed graphics on their website. But it does mean the attractions are easy to find in the dark! Anyway- it's what's inside that's important!
Due to Coronavirus, this years' Spooky World is being run a little differently. Instead of acting like a regular scream park where you experience the attractions in whatever order you want, this year there is a definitive trail to follow which directs you around the large site and directly into each maze.
We visited in the last slot of the day and the park was deadly quiet - every maze was pretty much a straight walk in with no queue, so we managed to get round the whole site in just about an hour, which included some time posing for photos with the wonderful Evil Twins.
The first attraction is Carnevil which would be a pretty standard clown maze - if it wasn't for the actors. For a late night run - these actors were on fire and attacked us relentlessly from beginning to end. We loved the parts where we were distanced by the clowns and they were looking down us from above - it was both terrifying and impressive in equal measures! All in we had some great scares throughout this fun maze.
Next up came Haunted House which we must say is not the most intricately themed scare attraction. Some rooms have really good detail while others were basically plain container walls or just some painted plywood. But what the maze lacked in theming and detail- it really made up for in scares. The actors throughout were some of the liveliest of the night with some interesting and fun scare tactics. Clearly there must be a surplus of good actors and scarers this Halloween, and we must commend Spooky World on scooping them all up. The level and intensity of the characterisations and scares were on top form throughout.
Fortunately for us the rain stopped by the time we reached the Field of Screams, which only meant we had to worry about avoiding a few puddles. We aren't generally fans of large un-themed corn fields, so walked into the field not expecting much. But then we realised how dense the corn was, and high it looked in the moonlight (this was easily one of the tallest corn mazes we have ever walked round.) And then came the scarecrows and the other actors. All appearing from apparently nowhere and all giving us great screams and startle scares. The maze was long, totally eerie and genuinely scary - well done to the actors for making such an impact.
The final real scare attraction in the line up was the Slaughterhouse which had a whole family of pig type creatures running around trying to kill us. There was quite a lot of new theming and effects throughout, but again the whole thing was made by the actors and they way they were just able to get multiple scares around the attraction. Like all the other mazes - it seemed to go on for quite a while and there were many surprises and scares along the way.
After a quick comfort break at the café, we headed to the Hayride which unfortunately turned into a bit of anticlimax. Being the last trailer of the night, the operators crammed too many people on, so social distancing was virtually non - existent (which wasn't helped when one group all removed their face masks the second the trailer moved.) Regardless of that - the effects and scares seemed to lack any real impact. It's sad when the scariest thing on a hayride is the water cannons and decontamination sprayers that left many people socked (remember this was October - and we were already cold before being hosed down!)
The trailer ride then leads into the Tunnel of Terror which again seemed to be a social distancing logistical nightmare. Operations staff were telling everyone to stay distant etc, yet the actors in the tunnel were doing just about everything they could to bunch people together. This included one person tormenting the front of the line and getting them on their knees while the rest of the "abusers" were telling everyone to move forward and squash up. With everything that is going in with the Covid virus at the moment - this final section really felt a bit unnecessary, and could have been managed a lot better.
So there we have it - we hate to end on a sour note as the first four attractions were all AMAZING. The scares throughout all of them were some of the strongest we have had this Halloween so far, and really left us laughing and screaming in equal measures. If the show had ended at that point we would have walked away happy. As it was - by moving the hayride and tunnel to the end and then cramming everyone in together as it was close to the end of the night, we didn't finish on a good experience. It may just have been the timing (we were close to 10pm and amusement parks have to currently officially be closed by that time), but it didn't give us the wow factor that the main scare mazes had done.
Therefore we have decided that we will remember our time at Spooky World fondly if we just think of the first four mazes only and try not to dwell on the ending of our tour! We certainly had enough scares in those mazes to keep us going all night - and still finished the event hoarse from screaming!

Review - Spooky World 2019
Spooky World returns this year with an unchanged line-up. Having had a good night last year, we were expecting great things!
First up, we headed for the Haunted Hayride. The hayride offered up some really great fire and water effects, and some other effects we did not expect - notably a giant spider chasing us from above which may terrify any real arachnophobes. The hayride offered a really fun experience - but one you should definitely be wearing a coat for, as the water effects are particularly intense at times!
Next up, we headed for Field Of Screams, a maze which sees creatures lusting for human flesh hunt you down through the corn. It was certainly intense in parts. Whilst it didn't feature many actors, those we did see were larger than life - even the pint-sized Freddy Krueger character who was not at all deterred by the fact that most of the people he was scaring were a good foot or more taller!
We then headed for the Slaughter House. Based in a pig abattoir and hunted by bloodthirsty human-pig hybrids, Slaughter House certainly packed a punch at times. Whilst, there were also moments where it felt like the maze of dark and disorientating corridors could have been better populated by actors, those that did lurk in the shadows did a good job of building tension. We particularly liked the abattoir hook section of the maze which offered a really nice set piece and solidified the maze’s theme well.
The Haunting: House of Horrors was out next maze of the evening. This featured some really good intense scares at times but wasn't quite the paranormally-orientated maze we expected from the title. Each room featured a scene totally different from the last and was reminiscent of a ghost train which changes from scene to scene. Credit must be given to the plague doctor character who certainly took their role very seriously and terrorised us to the exit door and beyond.
Finally, we headed to the Evil Carnevil. With this maze having doubled in size for 2019, we wondered how they would fill the space, but it certainly did not disappoint. The clowns within were enthusiastic and lively, offering some fun jump scares. One clown even insisted that a member of our group wear a spare clown mask throughout the remainder of the maze! It was definitely our favourite attraction of the night.
Mention should also be given to the Tunnel of Terror which has been newly introduced for the 2019 season, and used as an exit for both the Haunted Hayride and Slaughter House. Unfortunately, it didn't feel quite ready, with much of the tunnel still featuring un-themed ply board. It was also a little too light inside and we were able to clearly see the actors hands ready to strike though grab holes. However, we understand that this is still very much under development and due for big enhancements in 2020.
Overall, we had a fun night at Spooky World. Our only slight criticism would be a lack of atmosphere in places around the park. We felt this could be solved with some additional audio and an increase in roaming characters as we only saw two despite spending time in and around the main dining marquee.
Given the developments made this year and with further plans already afoot for next year, we look forward to seeing what Spooky World 2020 will bring!

Review - Spooky World 2018
With Spooky World having a bit of a re-jig with management this year, placing more seasoned scare creators at the helm, we expected big things from this season’s event and I have to say we were not disappointed! The majority of the attractions have had upgrades, while Slaughterhouse has had a whole re-theme that now tells the story of a very ‘close’ family of cannibal Hillbillies. The park layout remains pretty much the same other than a new, larger entrance/exit building that now includes the gift shop. Admissions staff were very friendly and helpful, perhaps lulling us into a false sense of security before the fear that was to come…
The first attraction we visited was Slaughterhouse. We were excited to experience the new story, though somewhat apprehensive of how this story would work in that space. Once we were inside it’s clear a lot of work had been done on the re-theme, with a new façade on the entrance, and an almost completely new route through the attraction itself, we think the new theme really worked! There were a few really good jump scares, and the attraction itself was very disorientating which really added to the scare factor. There were a few gaps where we expected more actors; however in retrospect we think that this added to the sense of walking towards our impending doom! The actors that we encountered in here had some really great make up effects. Overall a great re-theme, with actors that really worked their areas well.
Next we entered the Haunted House. Although there didn’t appear to be a clear narrative, there was an interesting mix of characters, and an interesting mix of scares. Jump scares, creep out scares, loud intimidation scares were all thrown in here which really did get the adrenaline flowing and works really well for your classic “Haunted House” attraction. We have to mention the two actors at the end; the crazy clown and the Freddy Krueger type of fellow, they definitely scared us the most, causing one of our party to almost have a “code yellow”!
Up next was Carnevil. A staple of Spooky World, this clown house is usually the most fun of the attractions and this year it still retains its title! Again, there have been some clear upgrades and slight route changes in this attraction which is great for returning visitors, but it’s the actors that really make this attraction. The characters in Carnevil are definitely the most energetic at this park. We had the same characters popping up to us at multiple parts of the attraction, as well as new ones, which was great at confusing us into thinking we were going round in circles and never going to escape! Of course this was just down to cleverly placed actor cut-throughs, which allow the actors to cover more space through the attraction; we were never actually lost, even when we were absolutely convinced we were! The actors in here must be very physically fit as we were out of breath just watching them bounce around! A really fun attraction that is still creepy and very unnerving even if you do not have a specific fear of clowns. This was certainly our favourite of the night.
Now it was time to jump on the Haunted Hayride. Here you are transported through a creepy forest that houses all sorts of fearsome creatures. This Hayride utilises a lot of special effects to scare the audience. We don’t want to say too much about this attraction as we don’t want to spoil it for you, but what we will say is make sure you wear a coat, preferably with a hood, and perhaps waterproof make up…
Our last attraction of the night was the Field of Screams. This was an interesting attraction and wasn’t what we expected at all. We had imagined being chased through a field of corn with jumps at every turn, but this attraction offered something different. The Field of Screams this year had more of a creep factor with a clear religious cult narrative. There were a lot of wonderful interactions with the characters in here, most notably the Priest and his assistant who did well to sneakily split up the group and disorientate us a few times. This attraction was a lot less energetic than the others; however within the narrative we think this worked well. There were a couple of jump scares in here but this was mostly a slow burn “creep out” type attraction.
While walking around the park itself we expected to see more roamers, but the ones we did see were really working the crowds well, including “The Evil Twins” a pair of scary clowns who were clearly well versed in the art of Scare. We later found out that every so often the attractions would have “breakouts” where an attraction would pause for a short time while the characters from inside “escaped” around the park. But we missed this experience due to being short on time on site ourselves. We think it’s an interesting and fun idea though and would love to see how the public receives this sort of thing at this particular park.
All in all, this year’s Spooky World has had some positive changes. Re-themes, re-routes and higher quality make-up were the most noticeable changes. We really enjoyed our night here and with enthusiastic actors, a friendly and professional operations team and experienced, knowledgeable management, we believe that Spooky World will continue to expand and grow, going from strength to strength and we look forward to returning again in the future.

Review - Spooky World 2017
I visited tonight and had heard great reviews about it and how terrifying it is. Whoever said it was terrifying was totally right! It was really quiet tonight but it didn’t stop me from having loads of fun haha. In a couple of the mazes it was so pitch black that i had to feel my way around so i could figure out where the next room was. It was a real challenge! I started off with the haunted hayride and it was a lot of fun. The ride through the woods is relaxing and there’s some pretty lights and really cool decorations dotte d around the woods. I would advise people to bring a waterproof coat as i got a tad wet. Its all good fun though. The carnevil was really fun. The actors and actresses looked amazing in the clown costumes! I loved the fact there were flashing lights to make it more challenging. It was one of my favourite mazes. The haunted house was another favourite as its multi level and the interior looks really great. The slaughterhouse was really good. At one point they got me to crawl and oink like a pig. It was completely new experience but fun as well. I also went into the maize maze which was great. It was really chilling not knowing where in the maze the staff are hiding which made it more exciting. Its deffo worth doing! I went into the small wooden maze near the end of my trip and its size is deceiving. It may look small but once your inside its a lot more challenging. I felt like i was going round in circles. I must’ve been in there for about 20 minutes. It felt like a like ages though . The staff are amazing at conversation. They’re super friendly and the mazes are pretty interactive. To sum it up in one word , spooky World is: AMAZING!! Thank you so so much Spooky World! I had an awesome time and I’ll definitely be back next year!! 🙂🙂🙂🙂
Review - Spooky World 2016
We arrived at Spooky World to a very quiet site. With only a hand full of guests invited to the VIP event, the park seemed very silent apart from the sound track that was blasting out of the speakers. There were a few queue line characters roaming the park so the lack of any other guests meant they targeted us a lot!. One notable character was the person in the blood soaked mask carrying a hammer. He never stood still during the whole night and was always twitching which was made us feel that we didn’t quite know what he was going to do next.
Haunted House - we were given our briefing by the staff and then we were on our way down a labyrinth of corridors. The theming in the first half of this house was very impressive and there were plenty of actors providing some good scenes, although some lacked confidence to interact with the guests, we are that as their run goes on these characters will find their rhythm. Towards the end, it felt slightly as if they had run out of time to theme these passageways and had left them very basic. This area could also yse one or two more actors as we were left expecting something around the corner but nothing was there. All in all it was an okay house, saved by the characters and theming in the first half !
Carnevil - we were invited into the circus by the evil baron Phil de vill and one of our group was singled out to crawl through a hole in the wall to the next room while the rest of us had the pleasure of using the door. It was a fun introduction to the maze. From here on in the maze mixed together the young clowns play pen where they wanted to play games and wanted to eat us through to all manner of crazy clowns attacking us from all angles. !We’d see the same faces time and again and started to wonder if there were twins in the house as they seemed to pop in front of us when we’d only just passed them a minute earlier. This was easily the best of the three ‘houses’, with the highly energetic performances showing that the clowns were certainly having their fun with the customers. We did it several times and laughed and screamed in equal measures.
Slaughterhouse - the house with the pig virus that mutates humans. The first few scenes in this house were slightly disappointing as the characters never really spoke and just stared at us as we walked by, It wasn’t until we were rounded up that we felt started to fear the mutated ones in there. This felt as if it was longest of the three main mazes and really could have done with a few more actors as there were long passageways with very little happening. There were a few characters who interacted with us and a few victims allong the way - but compared to the energy of the clowns, this felt a little flat
Haunted Hay Ride. This has always been a favourite and this year is much of the same as the characters would seem to come out of nowhere and jump on the trailer and get really up close and personal. We were toasted by flames and cooled off by water, and experienced some impressive efects. In a funny experience, one of the team got completely violated by a maniac wielding a chainsaw. This has always been a fun ride and we all thoroughly enjoyed it this year
.
Field of Screams - We were given our briefing by the member of staff and then given a torch and then told to walk in, no other instructions or hints, we were truly on our own to find our way around this maze. This was great because we found ourselves gingerly looking around the corners to see if there was anything in our path. Noises in the corn would distract us and we were startled a number of times by zombies that seemed appear out of thin air. This was a fun maze and the zombies did well with their stealth routines - as they kept scaring us!
All in all this was a great night, and it is clear the new management have big ideas for the event. If they iron out some of the small niggles that we mentioned regarding quiet patches then this will easily be their best year yet!.
