Scream at Eden Project
It's been a couple of years since The Eden Project first trialed a scare event and with Halloween approaching we were invited along to the dress rehearsal/press preview for Scream.On arrival at the event, the huge biomes glow against the darkness of the "Cornish pyramids". They look fantastic, and are a perfect introduction to an event that includes an ice-rink, Halloween disco and of course the Scream Fright Nights'; (our main point of interest)
As our group was called forward we walked in complete darkness to the biome, which was atmospheric but a bit difficult to see at times. Once inside, we were passed around a disclaimer with the usual spiel of what to expect etc. We were surprised that this wasn't delivered in person as we saw several people just passing the disclaimer around without reading it at all.
The show started with an excellent pre-show where two impressive actors really helped to explain the story which is tinged with a real green/environmental message about the destruction of the world's rain forest..We cant think of any other time we have entered a horror attraction where we have been left thinking seriously about a real-life situation like that. Well, that was until they mentioned the mysterious 'Forest people' who have taken a dislike to humans destroying their forest. We had the feeling that we were soon going to meet these creatures...
We entered the main show with our hands on shoulders which felt a bit uncomfortable for a 20 minute experience but as it was almost completely dark they obviously needed to keep the groups together. The experience started slowly with people warning us to turn back etc but before long we were being attacked from different sides. Unfortunately, the background noise was not as loud as it could be to really create the atmosphere that was needed for this event. It also gave way to a chainsaw revving in the distance which slightly spoiled any surprise as we kept expecting it. The actors were really full of energy, and as this was their first practice they really tried to get scares throughout. Their black costumes helped them blend into the darkness and most of the time we couldn't actually see them, and would either hear them or feel them grab us as we passed. They were really energetic and we had a number of good jump scares as the path twisted and wound round the biome with the shadows of large plants all around us. We're not quite sure why the 'forest people' were wielding chainsaws, but hey - we all know they get great scares!
We were lucky enough to get a second run through and once we knew the path a bit better we were able to enjoy the attraction even more. Unfortunately we caught up with the group in front and kept missing scares, We're hoping that this is just a dress rehearsal glitch as the actors were trying hard to scare people but couldn't get back to our group in time to use it again;
Overall we loved the backdrop of this event. The setting was fantastic and we loved the whole idea story and imagination prevalent throughout. Definitely something different!
