Scare Rooms at Alton Towers
Having stayed in a Th13teen themed scare room back in 2010 our group were eager to get checked in and see what this year had to offer.
It all started at check in where we were directed to a designated ‘Scare Room Check In’, manned by four very eerie characters, three of which walked us to the corridor where the scare rooms were located. Here they stopped, saying that terrible things had happened in the room and that they were unable to go any further. Although it would be hours before the scares started, this themed check in was a fantastic addition, creating a lot of interest from other guests staying at the hotel and effectively starting our experience from the moment we checked in.
The corridor where the scare rooms were located was designed very creatively using black sheets, strobe lighting and a soundtrack making it completely unrecognisable from the rest of the Alton Towers Hotel corridors. The room itself was also themed with a four poster bed, props and dull red lighting, creating a brilliant atmosphere and setting the mood for what was to come.
We were advised to be back in our room for 10pm, which was a massive improvement from last year’s 8.45pm time, giving our group more time on park. Just after 10pm our phone rang, but due to a technical issue we were unable to hear who, or what, was calling. A member of our group went to reception to get this fixed, which unfortunately took away some of the opening tension that could have been created at this time.
We were visited throughout the evening by various characters from a story told by the bell boy, Edgar. He did a fantastic job in building up atmosphere and dread about who we may be seeing throughout the evening and as each one arrived, the actors portrayed their roles perfectly.
Unlike last year’s scare rooms, this year followed a consistently dark storyline that was easy to follow. We witnessed terrible stories of what has happened to each of the characters, linking them together and enabling them to work closely in providing unpredictable scares and unsettling our group at all times.
Unfortunately, upon check in we found out that the scare rooms would only be running until 12am and not that of the advertised time of 2am. This is our only criticism of the evening, because it felt like the cast were pushing through the scenes to get everything completed, meaning that some of the tension of previous years was not fully created. This should be looked at for next year if the scare rooms are going to go ahead, as the cost of experience is very steep for 2 hours of scares.
That aside, the cast made the scare room experience unforgettable and one that we would be keen to repeat. We eagerly await news of the scare rooms making a return in 2012!
