Review - Poltergeist by Puzzlair
Room Escape experiences, by their very nature, can be inherently scary. After all – the idea of being locked in a room, and having to solve puzzles to escape, is a scenario lifted directly from a horror movie. It is therefore no surprise that many room escapes use dark themes of horror, murder and the supernatural.
At Puzzlair in Bristol, they have a variety of different themed rooms – most of them non scary, but Poltergeist is advertised as their 18+ scary room, so of course we decided to check in!
As with many reviews, we really cannot say much about the Poltergeist room, as half the fun is discovering things as they happen. Interestingly our first impression as we entered the room was “is this it?” and even one of the team joked, “I thought this was supposed to be scary”. Because of this, we were even more surprised when things actually did start to happen around us, and we are sure the room operator was having fun watching us jump at some of the sudden scares we had along the way.
We also have to mention, how hard some of the clues were. Although we managed to escape – we did have to use several hints when it looked like we had completely hit a dead end. Despite that – we also managed to crack some extremely devious puzzles – the likes of which we had not seen before.
Of course – despite all the puzzles and clues along the way, the biggest measure for us was whether we managed to escape or not, and we managed the final part of the exorcism with seconds to spare. The door lock sprung open and as we dived to open it, we knocked our arrangement of the final scene slightly and the door locked again! We therefore frantically had to re-position everything in under 4 seconds. In a stroke of luck, the clock struck zero JUST as the door unlocked for the second time and we completed our escape.
We thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience, including the multiple surprises along the way. From a slightly underwhelmed feeling when we first walked in – we came out buzzing with excitement and ready to do more. Certainly, on the way home we talked through some of the more obscure puzzles and how impressed we had been with the execution. If the other non – horror rooms at Puzzlair are as fun as this – then we can’t wait to go back and try them out.
