Pitch Black Scare Attraction
Over the last few years, we have been really impressed with the mazes at Hop Farm Freak Festival. From the darkness of The Underground to the crawling in The Hatch, each maze at the event was unique and scary, so it was sad news when we heard that it would not return in 2013. Fortunately the chief designer, Tom Swift has taken many of the exciting concepts from Hop Farm and rolled them into one brand new show in Southborough:
Themed around a visit to Mr Porky's meat factory, guests are advised that the lights have gone out and are issued with one single glow stick to light the way ahead of them. What then follows is one of the most confusing mazes we have ever experienced, especially as this was a true maze with dead ends around every corner. Depending on their ability to solve the maze, guests could be left wandering round for ages, and on the night we visited there were some young guys who had been lost for over 40 minutes!
If all we had to do was find the exit, this wouldn't have been too difficult but everywhere, we went there were actors and characters waiting to pounce and alongside the numerous mannequins, we were never sure who or what was real! Of course it didn't help that everything was only dimly lit by the glow of the glow-stick and no other light. Oh yes, and the least we say about the hidden doors and moving walls the better!
Walking around in the gloom with monsters stalking us from all sides, and no obvious way out was very unnerving and as we kept bumping into each other (we started the attraction in small groups) we were all starting to panic that we wouldn't ever actually find the way out!
Finally after a fortuitous moment when we turned the corner to see an actor moving a wall, we found the escape route and thought we had exited the attraction. How wrong we were. Following the main room were a number of completely different maze scenarios with us having to find our way through tunnels, curtains, cages and a moment that lived up to the event's name, as the glow stick was taken off us and we had to just follow a rope home.
The length of the attraction and the differing styles of each room was really impressive and was like a condensed version of the Hop Farm mazes. Elements from the Hatch, The Slaughterhouse and The Darkness are evident in this attraction's DNA as well as the aforementioned maze element. In fact to say much more would ruin the surprise that greeted us each time we escaped from one particular scene.
Due to the maze element throughout our large group all managed to complete the attraction in different times and amazingly there was probably a delay of about ten minutes between the first survivor and the last despite the fact we all went in at virtually the same time!
In Pitch Black, Tom has created a genuinely exciting maze that manages to scare, confuse and delight in equal measures. The detail in all the scenes, the quality of the actors and the sheer ability to feel completely lost all add up to make a truly enjoyable experience that had everyone laughing with delight - ONCE they had found their way out. Add in a few power tools, some roaming hill billy creatures and a great sense of fun, and the whole experience was one of the most original attractions we have seen this Halloween!

I loved the actors, as you would walk past them and they would look plastic. But the third time, they would move and scare the hell out of you. They cornered us, and tried to separate us from our friends - Catz.
