Outbreak at Blackpool Tower Dunegon
The UK Dungeon attractions always like to celebrate seasonal holidays and recently we have seen them become "The Home of Halloween" as well as introducing a "Ghost of Christmas",
For February half term all the attractions have introduced "Outbreak" an extension of their regular plague doctor shows. We went along to Blackpool Tower Dungeon to see if the doctor had found a cure.....
Inside the building, we were handed scratch cards which we were instructed to keep safe as they would be needed shortly. Once the Jester greeted us, there were some changes to the regular dialogue as he told us how the plague had spread across Blackpool and that we were all at risk. At this point after an innuendo about why we were scratching, we were told to scratch our cards to reveal who was safe and who was infected. In true ScareTOUR style, the team were considered infected and we were separated from the group. The infected were put in one lift and the healthy were put in another. Whilst this was a fun gimmick, this is unfortunately where it ended.
Once out of the lift, the show was exactly the same as before, full of comedy, horror and some fun scares. It was still a great show but we were disappointed that the Outbreak theme wasn't continued. Especially as there were some obvious places (the Dark Chapel for example) where the scripts could easily have been changed.
We couldn't help feel a bit cheated that the new show was just a scratch card gimmick and didn't try something more original. Compared to the Christmas show that gave us some good scares, this seasonal makeover didn't work and we look forward to the Blackpool Tower Dungeon opening a new permanent show in the future.
