Nevendon Manor Halloween Event
Nevendon Manor is a 16th Century manor house in Wickford, Essex and each year they open their grounds up for a massive Halloween event.
After being met by some spell casting witches, we were ushered to move on round the courtyard, towards a gate. As we moved around the grounds it was clear that a lot of care and attention to detail had been put into dressing the set. Everywhere we looked there were skeletons, bags of body parts, cobwebs and bats. It was spooky Halloween themed fun at its best.
Soon, a group of well-stationed grim reapers directed us to our first scare maze, The Dollhouse. This maze was claustrophobic, dark and full of creepy doll children asking us to play with them...forever. The well designed tableaux, coupled with a short maze filled with hanging material, all made for a very creepy experience. We left at a run, chased by screaming doll children, and headed across a bridge with some very disturbing sights, such as a huge demon standing over a fire, and a large pond full of skulls.
The rest of the experience was laid out in close sections, one after the other. A girl trapped in a cage asking us to find the key and let her out while we were chased out by a power-tool wielding maniac, Jack the Ripper pulling the guts out of a prostate lady of the evening, 'the guvnor' and his caged wenches, the haunted woods where a werewolf chased us down a path etc. Each of these scenes were well played and realistic and served to effectively shepherd us so we didn't go wandering off before we reached the final section of the event.
A frantic woman came running out of a shack screaming at us to get out, before suddenly, from every corner and behind every tree, hideous, rotting zombies came shrieking, groaning and shambling towards us. There was nothing left for us to do but run and even once we thought we had gotten away the sound of a chainsaw broke the stillness of the woods...
By the time we got to the safety of a nice bonfire and a burger van we were rattled, exhausted and thoroughly entertained!
Overall the length of the experience, the set dressing and the variety and levels of horror were very impressive. The actors were also really enthusiastic, even though it was the last of a 5 night run - we were surprised some of them had any voices left considering how energetic their screams and bellows were!
The Halloween event at Nevendon Manor will return in 2014.
