Nevendon Manor 2015
The biggest thing that amazes us about Nevendon Manor Halloween each year, is that this event is literally built in someone’s back garden. Granted that the back garden is acres of land attached to an 16th century manor house, but it is still remarkable that this is effectively a very large home haunt.
But that really is a massive disservice to the team who put on his event, as the hour long tour round the venue is one of the most impressive stops on our Halloween travels, and one that mixes wicked humour and terrifying scenes to great effect. Unlike similar attractions, the fun at Nevendon doesn’t let up once during the experience, and even between scares and scenes there is always something going on. The tour itself started off with the suitably creepy Dolls house which was a scary as before, but after, that most of the scenes were completely different from what we had seen before. Our highlight of the tour included the puritanical witch hunters, with an absolutely amazing effect that genuinely shocked us. As we were chased out of the scene we were genuinely worried that the person playing the witch really had just been hung by the neck!
The fact that the other scenes included Jekyll and Hyde, a zombie response team, and some little squealing piggy children is a testament as to how crazy this event is. If you don’t like one scene or scenario, then don’t worry – as another one will be coming along straight after. As we have mentioned before – every inch of this attraction is beautifully decorated and the attention to detail in every scenes leaves many other Halloween events standing. Even walking between shows and scenes – the pathways are beautifully decorated and keep you immersed in the event and doesn’t make you feel you are just killing time between attractions The attention to detail also extends to the multitude of actors who put on a really impressive performance and look stunning in their move quality costumes and make up.
The problem with writing too much about Nevendon Manor is that it gives too much away. We spent about an hour during our tour and we were delighted and surprised with each new scene and character that we encountered. Nevendon is able to throw so much stuff at you during a visit that we would genuinely struggle to recall everything. While writing this review , we have just remembered the contents of the final scene – a gorily gruesome affair that again left us worrying for the actors safety. In fact we had probably better check the papers – and make sure that Essex wasn’t home to a spate of unexplained murders over Halloween!
When summarising the event, it is really hard to condense into one line why it is so great. Everything just comes together perfectly to make a show that is fun, scary, confusing, entertaining, theatrical and terrifying. At the end of the day – what more could we want?
