Mission of Fear - Jungleland Telford
Now in it's second year, Mission Of Fear returns to Telford's Jungleland after last years success. As part of the lineup for Jungleland Frightnights we were interested to see how the attraction fit in with the less scary, child friendly activities being offered elsewhere in the building.
On entering, it was encouraging to see the building bustling with excited families, many of whom had come in their best scary outfits. Everywhere you looked there was something for the kids to do whether it be crafts, face painting, a disco or creepy crawly hunts around the venues main adventure play areas, as well as unlimited play throughout the night. There was a great atmosphere, with some elaborate decoration (we loved the giant moving spooky black cats) and all staff members had made the effort to dress up and act the part.
Located in the adjoining Laser Invasion arena, Mission Of Fear is billed as only for the brave. Being led upstairs our hosts were a credit to the attraction. To the adults they were suitably scary and intimidating but to the less confident younger ones, offered encouragement and humour.
We went through multiple times first as part of a family group (with a small child aged 3) and then later on as an adult group. Our family group had one less confident younger visitor. She was offered a special vest to identify her to the maze's inhabitants to ensure a less scary experience. The system worked brilliantly as the actors inside focused their attention on us and there wasn't a tear insight from any of the younger guests. All too often we've seen parents force their children through scare attractions only for them to come out traumatised, and not wanting to go in any future mazes, but here the team fully understand the different tolerances of each guest - not an easy task by any means.
We've taken part in a couple of temporary scare attractions set up in Laser Tag arenas before and we always note how well these environments lend themselves to scare attractions. The design of the maze is well thought out to make it easy to navigate for guests and offering an obvious linear route through but also offers the actors multiple hiding places and room to improvise. The upstairs section needed little decoration as the theme already suited the maze perfectly, downstairs decoration was a little more focused turning a simple square room into a terrifying series of locations which were well themed.
The small team of actors are incredible and really work the maze well providing multiple scares within the group on each run through. The upstairs section feels long, dark and a great use of the space, the new downstairs section came as a surprise to a few of us who had assumed the terror was over. Instead, as we zig zagged through, we were treated to the climax of the attraction.
Later on as a more adult group we experienced a more extreme version of the maze where we were picked on, singled out and teased from start to finish. Actors really pushed the boat out and provided more than just impact scares, and were able to direct the guests exactly where they wanted them to be - one actor in particular had us cowering away in fear.
Its interesting to note that each run through the maze felt different, with the actors left to improvise. We felt that the maze didn't feel stale at any point as a result and the finale evolved on each run through.
At £5.99 for children and £1.99 for adults entrance to Jungleland Fright nights is incredible value, especially when you take into account that unlimited entrance to Mission Of Fear is included in that price. Its a great introduction to scare attractions for first timers but also offered something exciting for the veterans amongst the group and with the other activities there's something for all of the family.
