Mickey's Not so Scary Halloween Party
Walt Disney World, Florida
A trip to Orlando at Halloween wouldn't be complete without a trip to Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party. As you might expect, it's not about being scared but more of a celebration of everything we love about Halloween.
Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party is a seperately ticketed event so if you haven't upgraded your ticket you'll be asked to leave at 7 clock when the fun really starts. The park goes into overdrive over Halloween and lavish displays adorn every corner. Unlike Halloween Horror Nights and Howl O Scream, costumes are encouraged (as long as they're family friendly) and it really adds to the experience, as everyone seems to get into the spirit of the event and really make an effort, including the characters themselves!
On entering the park you're given a trick or treat bag with which you're encouraged to go trick or treating throughout the park at various stations and trails. Without too much effort it's easy to go away with a ridiculous amount of candy! We also found that being with there on the final night of the event, cast members were even more generous with what they were giving out!
Entry is limited and although bustling, it's not unbearable with queues for the rides much lower than you'd be expect in the daytime at the park. We needed very little persuasding when it comes to riding the likes of Big Thunder Mountain and Splash Moutain in the dark. It is worth noting though that the Haunted Mansion understandably attracts some of the biggest queues but it just wouldn't feel like Halloween unless we rode it. Since our last visit the park have added a new interactive queue section which you can choose to bypass if you wish. It's great fun to experience once but not something we would bother with more than that as generally it takes longer to queue through than the normal line.
Without a doubt though, the two biggest attractions of the event are two of the parks signature shows. If you've been to the Magic Kingdom you may be familiar with the excellent Wishes fireworks spectacular. Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party hosts Hallowishes, which is absolutely incredible and is arguably better than regular Wishes. With a soundtrack of The Nightmare Before Christmas, some of your favourite Disney villains and some of the most breathtaking fireworks we've ever experienced it's one show not to be missed. The second large scale show is the Boo To You Parade which features the catchiest soundtrack at a Disney park (with of course the exception of It's a Small World). If it has been a dry night you'll be treated to seeing the headless horseman as a prelude to the parade before the swarms of dance troupes and large floats flood the streets for this incredible spectacle which encompasses everything we love about halloween.
Quite simply, there isn't a more magical time to visit the Magic Kingdom and despite the upcharge for the event, we feel that it still offers value for money when you take into account the incredible shows, shorter lines, exclusive one off photopass shots and copious amounts of candy. For the hardened scare fans it offers very little but everyone should visit at least once to experience the atmosphere for themselves.
