Lost is the debut scare attraction experience from the brand new terror company Primrose Unknown Projects. Owned by Lee and Sarah Conway, Halloween home haunters for many years, Lost was to showcase their talents and give them a step up on the commercial scare attraction ladder and raise much needed money for the Rotherham Hospice charity at the same time.
We arrived at the “house with no name” just before 6pm and a small crowd had already formed outside the main building (a large cricket pavilion) with most people sitting under canopy’s and gazebos and talking excitedly about what they were about to experience. The building looked old and creepy and, with all the windows boarded up, created a sense of impending doom . Before we knew it our time had come, we were summoned to the entrance tent by the Grounds Keeper, a rather angry, insane and odd character wearing wellington boots, overalls and brandishing a mop! Once inside the dispatch tent we were given the usual safety chat which was comically interjected with quips about 50 shades of grey and doing “the sex”, like I said, insane! Once we had all agreed we didn’t suffer from a nervous disposition (and shown a face of what this looks like just in case) we were taken up the concrete steps to the entrance of the attraction. Capacity inside the attraction had proven to be a nightmare for the Primrose team with only one group inside at a time, more on that later though. The mop was hammered against the steel door and we were told to open it and step inside.
Once inside the building the door slammed shut behind us and we were left in semi-darkness for a short period. We could make out doors to our left and right and 2 sets of stairs leading up and down to the cellar area. Just as we were starting to make conversation between ourselves a girl appeared, seemingly anxious and in need of our help. She ushered us into the first room and told us the story of the house and explained that her sister had been taken and we needed to find her. With this we were asked to leave but first one of the group had to “collect her bag” from the corner of the room. None of our brave bunch would go and get it so I had the pleasure of pulling back the curtain to find it. A character jumped out on us and provided the group with a startle scare. To the trained eye, a simple and obvious setup to use but screams rang out from the 3 girls who made up the rest of our party suggesting simple is often the best way to go. After this we were taken down stairs into a tea party/dinner table room setup lit with blue light and were instantly ordered to sit down. We all followed the command and then a character appeared who was adamant we ate! Raw mince and maggots on a plate with a side order of salad, not my ideal dinner time scenario but I am sure I have eaten worse on a Saturday night! Was this an E-coli disaster of biblical proportions waiting to happen or a stroke of genius? It certainly had everyone making sounds of disgust and turned the stomachs of the group sat around the table. Whilst we were considering asking for the head chef to “pop over” so we could complain about the food the character was making her way around the table, whispering in people ears and, before we all got too comfortable in her domain, orders were once again barked for us to get out and we made our way back up the stairs to the entrance to the attraction.
The following 2 rooms were a bit of an oddity and we didn’t quite know how they fitted into the story of the lost girl. We were told to enter a child’s bedroom scene and “wait for someone to get us”. We waited but nothing happened and, after a few minutes, the girl who dropped us off there earlier came back and told us to get out quickly and follow her. I guess the team were trying to make us feel alone and isolated, unsure of where the scares would come from as doing nothing can be as scary as a masked creature jumping out on you but the room had so many great opportunities to scare us due to how they had designed the space we felt disheartened that nothing did happen. We were then led upstairs to the top of the building and entered a gambling den that seemed to have been the scene of a murder. What was interesting about this location is the team had not made the room dark, light was pouring in from outside and was the only lit space in the entire show. Because of this we could see everything the room had to offer us and our attention was focused on an apparently dead person lying on the floor clutching a bunch of keys. Our guide told one of our group to go and get the keys from the dead man’s hands but, as the chosen “victim” got to him he sprang to life and began to scream at us. The guide got the keys instead and once again ordered us out of the location. Down 2 flights of stairs this time, passing our dinner host from earlier, now in the child’s bedroom, nursing a doll.
The pace seemed to pick up here and we had a sense the finale was almost upon us. The girl who had been guiding us from the start took us into a very creepy cellar area which looked like a meat locker. Body parts and intestines were hanging from the ceiling and walls and a slow strobe light made the scene look very creepy. An actor stood with her back to us who, it transpired, was the missing sister and as she slowly turned around we saw her face was ripped in half with a zip attached to her forehead, a very nice effect. From here we entered the final room, a Harris fence corridor in almost total darkness. An actor dressed in black robes blocked our path whilst a half naked man covered in cuts and scars ensured we couldn’t move backwards. Panic seemed to set in with some of the members of our group and screams echoed around the room but then the actor stood to the side and allowed the group to pass, exiting into the daylight. For me though the action was still not over as I was told I wasn’t allowed to leave and was kept inside on my own. The actor who was behind us asked if I liked his scars and if I wanted some myself. I turned down his offer and was then screamed at to also get out which I promptly did.
So, what did we think of the experience? Well, we need to remember this was their first ever attempt at a scare attraction on a large commercial basis and that it was done for charity. It would be unfair on the team at Primrose to try and compare it to other attractions as they did all this with virtually no budget to spend on expensive effects, prosthetics or props. The show was aimed at good old family scares and was quite theatrical in nature, perhaps the teen market and thrill seekers would have left disappointed but this was never the aim of this show. It was to get Primrose on to the ladder, to see them heading towards bigger and better things and to showcase local acting talent, it will sit nicely on their events portfolio as a reminder of where it all began for them. I’m sure once the show is over and the excitement dies away they will sit down and look at ways of improving the overall package, small tweaks here and there, making the building work for them and playing with layouts to get more capacity etc.
We had fun at Lost and we hope the team have raised a lot of money for a very deserving charity. We look forward to seeing what they come up with next.

I thought that Lost was a brilliant first attempt scare attraction from Primrose Unknown Projects. It was certainly scary enough for me, making me jump several times! Anything more and I wouldn't return with my kids next year, as it is I would feel confident to attend again. The fact that the proceeds went to the local hospice was a real plus.

Having experienced Lost this weekend I was shocked at some of the scenes included (and not shocked in a good way). The raw meat/maggot scene was one of the most uncomfortable things I have ever experienced and I am really pleased that no-one in our group even tried to eat the meat!
It was clear that this was a first effort from the team and its good to see that the small entrance fee is going to charity. The charity element forgives a multiple of sins but I am glad that I didn't travel too far to experience
Clearly the Primrose team have a massive passion for scary stuff but personally I think they have a way to go to match some of the other experiences in the UK. Their sophomore effort shows promise but is still really too rough around the edges to tempt me back

A fantastic location in a very old and creepy cricket pavilion but all boarded up and isolated looking very creepy and atmospheric. The whole inside was a logistical nightmare spreading over 4 floors but very well done to the team for taking you in and out of different rooms from a bedroom, dining room, nursery, gambling den and cold store. There were some great and simple use's of light in most rooms to disorientate and confuse you leaving you totally exposed to scares and what the actors could do!
.
The actors did a fantastic job not only having a bit of a laugh but also bringing some great screams from around the darker sections of the attraction. The only criticism is that you were shouted at to many times to get out a room. This was my one and only gripe with it but it raised some good money for charity and did give everyone, young and old a good thrill.

Thought the guys and gals did a really good job seeing as this was there first venture. And the young cast were really good and seemed to really enjoy what they were doing. And for charity too a bargain at 3 quid ;-)
