Screamfest presented by Kraken Rum
So on a random Thursday night we drove into the heart of London, trying to find somewhere to park for Kraken Rum's Screamfest event, which was held at MC Motors in North London. The venue itself is made up of different buildings which the event used to great affect.
We entered into what looked like a Victorian front room, where we were given our contracts, which meant we were handing our souls over to the Kraken. Once the contracts had been signed in ink, and we had blank red tags put around our necks, the adventure begun. We were met by Bill, a fisherman full of tall tales. He spoke about the Kraken and it's rare ink, some people were to say he was a liar others he was telling the truth. Either way, we were going to find out for ourselves. We were in what looked like a warehouse room by the docks with a massive set of doors facing us. The room was misty and filled by the sounds of the sea with seagulls and the odd bell ringing every now and again. This is where the hunt to find what it all meant began.
The doors opened and we were sent down a tunnel, which Bill called the portal, where we were met by a witchy woman, the kraken in human form. The room was filled with smoke and weird smells filled the air, and she told us that there was to be a sacrifice to gain access to the legendary ink of the Kraken. We were handed a shot of rum to calm the nerves an afterwards being told this also included human spirit from unworthy souls who tried travelling the path we were taking ourselves.
The witch, then begun a ritual summoning a beast, her voice was deepened and echoed through our surroundings and then with flashes of flames, sparks and bangs the ritual was over. This provided a number of jump scares with the pyrotechnics and noises from all around. Also all the way up to this point there was full interaction between actor and guests.
Now this is where the red tags come into play, we were told to take these blank pieces of paper off an dip them in water. Once taking them out, words started to appear on the paper, an what did it say? Your soul belongs to me, basically we were screwed. From here the witch led us through thick fog, over an around a raised area which really felt we were walking across water, an every now and again we passed candles an shimmers representing the lost souls on our path. We were led under false pretenses that we were going to reach our goal, that fabled elixir, the Kraken's ink. Well at this point from out of the fog a submarine appeared, which was to take us to our end goal.
Walking down into the submarine the witch bid us individually farewell, and only before stroking my face an hair and then slamming the door behind us. We were now in the belly of a submarine, periscope an all. All the controls could be interacted with including the periscope, but here it is where it truly went wrong. The submarine started shaking, the lights blaring and flashing red, sirens going off, the full works, audio jump scares galore.
We were being dragged to the depths by the Kraken itself, which could be seen above us in shadow form, flailing it's tentacles etc. At this point, just before we were truly doomed there was a sound, someone had come to our rescue, a door flung open and we were pulled to safety or were we? We entered, a new room filled with all the other guests before us. Here could be found the bar (free cocktails all night long) and other actors interacting with the guests.
There was a mermaid or siren depending on how you answered her questions. She would either tell you to go sparkle yourself to be worthy or if you were already worthy, then she would granted you a gift. (One of her special cocktails that came in a conch shell) . There was an Eastern fortune teller, reading people's fortunes, always leading to a dark and fateful end, unless you joined in a cleansing ritual. And upstairs? The doctor of sorts who said she had been here for 20 years trying to re-create the fabled ink an elixir. She would ask you the back up of your drink in hand if you had one writing down percentages an the like, and afterwards she paid you for your information (a fake gold coin to gain another different special cocktail from the bar). After checking everything out we noticed the doctor making her way down carrying a machine. From here the bar area, became the stage for the doctor. She had done it!! She had re-created the elixir - the Kraken's pure black ink. The lighting and sound changed throughout the venue, after all our efforts we had done it together. Time to raise a glass to the Kraken!
From here, the other actors and also new ones began walking about the venue interacting with the guests, including the mermaid who had found her legs, only to realise that Ed the cabin boy had a foot fetish and was infatuated with her! After another hour or two drinking, the night came to an end, back into the real world, like coming back to the surface of the water. We were outside into the London air and the night was finished. The evening was great but also different to your normal scare event or attraction, though it could be twinned with the likes of the dungeons and the like. The Les Enfants Terribles production company were great with their scripting and guest interactions, and we can't wait to see what Kraken Rum does for Screamfest next year.
