Horror Camp Live 2015
The event takes place in various locations around Scare Kingdom and definitely makes the most of their strengths. For the majority of the evening, the ballroom is used as a base, where we enjoyed a barbeque dinner and watched a movie before our evening was hijacked, and we were sent off to face a host of challenges. The tasks were there to afford us the chance of survival from the event's antagonist Lockjaw.
The theatrical and performance elements of the evening were very well executed. The actors did an incredible job of staying in character for such a long amount of time with plenty of energy, and did well to mix the sick and twisted horror of the games and challenges with lighthearted humour and even song! Everytime we were presented with a new challenge we had a feeling of dread in the pits of our stomachs. The intrigue of what we were to discover coupled with the comedy really did carry us through.
The challenges themselves genuinely tested the group and it's fair to say that from the moment the clock starts you don't have a second to waste. Time is very short and the challenges are tough. Some tested us mentally, others tested our nerve. Although we felt incredibly lucky that we weren't the group chosen to partake in a certain delicacy which when mentioned had us absolutely cringing!
We loved having a little extra time within some of the locations within Manormortis and Pyschomanteum, and thoroughly enjoyed seeing a little more of the park, including some spaces we have never been to before. Having more time in the specific sections, and being a more interactive part of the scenes than we are normally used to made us feel truly immersed, and honestly, it was a treat to get to spend some more time in the truly beautifully produced rooms. We could have happily spent the whole night looking at the stunning details in each area.
Our hosts for the evening Incesta and Dybuk, did well to keep control of the rowdy group throughout, as well as being genuinely entertaining in their interactions with each other and the guests. The way they read the room and made sure that everyone was involved was absolutely fantastic. A paticular mention though has to be to Phooofa who the whole group loved and wanted to see even more interaction with. We felt that we could have seen more from this role, as it was truly wonderful although this may have been downplayed due to time constraints or a general concensus based on the guests on the night. We should add at this point that the experience can massively rest upon the guest's interactions, and the team do their absolute best to convey this to ensure a great night is had by all. Lockjaw is a great villain used well and not too often leading to over-saturation. When we did eventually get to meet him face to face the effect was incredibly well executed and provided a tense finale for the whole group.
There is a great mix of whole group interaction, small group tasks and a very intense individual experience with Lockjaw's creation The Automiton. This genuinely struck fear into our hearts, as even being hardened scare reviewers, the thought of one on one interaction with this creature in the depths of Manormortis made us truly nervous...and a little excited!
After an evening of failing miserably at our missions (they were that tough!) we were left trying to solve a final puzzle with just 4 of the 9 clues required. Needless to say we didn't manage to appease Lockjaw and in panic we were forced to flee the Ballroom to the 'safety' of our tents!
Back at the camp we had a few interactions during the night so don't be fooled into thinking that you'll get a good sleep. We would personally like to have seen a few more of these but these may have been toned down a little because of some of the guests reactions. None the less, we got to witness an incredibly funny wakeup call from Abe Cleaver as he paraded around each tent in his own unique way and left us giggling as we watched our neighboring tents being awoken abruptly
In total the experience lasted 13 hours and provided great value for money. As usual with any similar attraction, the group bonded extremely quickly so it didn't matter that we didn't know anyone however, I suspect in a large group the experience would be even more fun. We went into the whole event with an open mind, and an idea of what we were to expect, but we really were blown away by this unique experience.
